Aaaand then we have the crater proper. Oh boy. Sephiroth is busy killing some clones here, and he teleports about crazily and makes a few speeches as we head towards the center of the swirly ring. Jenova actually was about a hundred times easier for me to beat then that two-headed dragon at the end of Gaea's Cliff.

The big reveal. Hoo boy. We have Sephiroth being oh-so-helpful here again. As Oddacious pointed out, they just sort of stand around talking. This section is really sort of a Temple of the Ancients part 2, where the team stands around looking blocky while Sephiroth reveals all of the major plot points of the game. And yet, while he's telling us the truth and going on about his plans to destroy the planet, he never really gives away his motivations.

I think this is really the strongest part of his character as a villain, myself. We know what he's doing, and what he's hoping to accomplish, but not why. Is he just a raving lunatic? Is it really Jenova controlling the whole thing? Is this really a carefully thought out plan to become a god? Is he hoping that Cloud will kill him and set him free, or is he hoping that Cloud is the one puppet who can truly do his bidding? I don't know, I think that the game leaves it open for you to pretty much supply your own answers. Which is a good thing. I like that woobie-roth is just as valid an interpretation as crazy-roth or clone-roth or secretly!Zack-roth.

So while Cloud is being Mr. Cool Ice during the big reveal (No biggy! Hey it's just an illusion! Chillax Tifa!) Tifa is begging Cloud not to think, and not to watch. I've always wondered if she's worried that Sephiroth will break him with the truth, or if she's more afraid that him remembering will destroy the relationship and the trust she's built with him. On the one hand, I think she's a very selfless individual when it comes to her friends, but on the other hand I think she's a deeply flawed person and her own selfish fears and doubts are really shining through the most here.

Cloud walking on the ceiling is fucking weird. I'm not really sure if he's in control and flying about like Sephiroth does, or if Sephiroth is controlling him directly, or if he's tapping into Sephiroth's powers to fly about and defy gravity.

The WEAPONs are really cool looking. They're a nice mix of giant robot and giant monster. I like the concept of them too. The idea behind them is terrifying, these are the Planet's last resort. They'll go out and kill everything that's hurting the planet. It reinforces what Bugenhagen talks about.

Flashback time with Tifa! She goes to the train station and Cloud is there, presumably drooling and mumbling and collapsed on the ground. As soon as Tifa arrives and starts interacting with him he stands up and switches to his Cool Guy pose and acts like nothing is wrong. And then, as soon as Tifa turns her back on him he freaks and starts shaking and grabbing his head. She suggests the Avalanche job to him to keep him close, because she heard that he's "going far away." Where is he going? To the Reunion maybe?

The WEAPON Raid on Junon is awesome. I love Junon to pieces, so maybe I'm a bit biased but... There's just so much suspense and action! And oh man, the first time I got the big reveal, when Barret opens the window and shows off Meteor in the sky, I just about pissed myself. It's a very immediate and ominous threat, unlike the Mako Reactors. It's always there for the rest of the game, hanging above you looking scary.

3. Did you see any differences from the game to the compilation?
The Compilation really ignores just how fucked up Cloud is. Sure, he's mopey and monotone in AC, but in FF7 he's a gibbering wreck. He's constantly blacking out and collapsing and twitching crazily and hearing voices.

At this point he really strikes me as being just like that clone you find in the sewage pipe, but that bit about 'going far away' I never noticed that.
