CONNECTIONS
[Family:]
Mia Fey: Maya's big sister who raised her when she was small and maybe spoiled her a little. She's now deceased. Mia was always a great inspiration to Maya, because she defied what was expected of her and went and did some great things. That's part of the reason Maya started to help Phoenix out. It's also a little bit of the reason she feels so constrained by the expectations people have of her now that she's the Master. Maya doesn't expect to see her sister much anymore, not half because she can't seem to make it down to the city to help Phoenix out with cases anymore! And also because she's usually the one who has to channel her. She's been known to write an exchange diary with her sister when she's going through a tough time, but she hasn't done that lately because she knows she's got to make it on her own.
Morgan Fey: Morgan was Maya's aunt who behaved in loco parentis to her, though pretty much strictly legally. Morgan was never much of a mother to Maya when she was young, but she was always scrupulously proper and polite to her when she became the next in line to be the Master. She did love her aunt, in the way you love and show respect to a family member who takes care of you, but by and large her aunt was never very loving to her. When Pearl was born, Maya stopped seeing much of Morgan. She had no idea of her aunt's evil plans until case 2-2 happened and Morgan was imprisoned. Even then, she couldn't bring herself to hate Morgan. She mostly just feels sorry for her.
Pearl Fey: Pearly is practically Maya's favorite person in the whole wide world. She's so cute and tiny and innocent that all Maya wants to do is spend time with her and make her happy. She puts up a brave front to save Pearl's feelings pretty often, and likes to spend time doing fun things with her. Pearl is a better channeler than Maya even at her age, but Maya was only ever proud and never jealous. She likes to share the exciting parts of the wider world with Pearl and hopes that Pearl will grow up to be as comfortable in the city as she is one day.
Misty Fey: Her estranged and now deceased mother. Maya expected to hear from her mother again someday, but not without knowing who she was! She's still conflicted and sad about how her mother died, but she keeps up a strong facade for Pearly's sake. She's reminded of her mother pretty often now that she's learning the Master's duties.
Iris: Maya didn't know that Iris was her cousin when they met, but she's glad to have her in the family now that she knows! She's very nice and accomodating and Maya plans to visit her as often as she can for training and to get away from Kurain.
[Friends:]
Phoenix Wright: Nick is pretty hopeless without Maya, at least that's what she thinks. Granted, in some ways the two of them are peas in a pod: She doesn't cook and neither does he, she's broke and usually so is he, she's a total spaz and so is he... They've been through a lot together, and even though they don't always see eye to eye, (for one he's a lot taller than her) she loves him like family. She's never had an older brother or even a clear conception of what having one would be like, (what with the lack of men in her home community) but that's about the size of the feelings she has for him. He's pretty much her best guy friend and even though things were (and are!) totally crazy when they were working together, she wouldn't have missed it for the world. Even though she got accused of murder, kidnapped by a killer and attacked by evil ghosts.
Dick Gumshoe: Maya thinks Gumshoe's a pretty great guy, even if he seemed kind of mean at first. He's nice to her and her cousin, which is a pretty good indicator for her that he's a good guy. She feels bad for him that he's so broke all the time which is kind of hypocritical considering that she doesn't make any money and just mooches off Phoenix all the time. Maybe Gumshoe needs a Phoenix to mooch off of?
Miles Edgeworth: Edgeworth is pretty stuck up, and at first she didn't like him at all. But after the events of State versus Edgeworth, she got to see how he got to be the way he is a little bit and she felt for him. The two of them are connected in a sense by her mother, and she was glad to extend a helping hand to him by being arrested during his trial in order to get an extension. Not only that, but he helped her out when she was kidnapped and went missing! She thinks he's a pretty cool customer and wouldn't mind hanging out with him if he seemed like the kind of guy who "hung out."
Larry Butz: Maya doesn't really "get" Larry, but she likes him. His enthusiasm for all things is pretty infectious and when added to her own enthusiasm they become an UNSTOPPABLE WALL OF POSITIVITY. His point of view is usually simple enough not to go over her head, except when it comes to romantic relationships. She doesn't really consider him a dependable sort, but she doesn't have any problem with hanging out with him even if Nick isn't around.
Maggey Byrde: She considers the self-appointed Queen of Bad Luck a good friend of hers. She likes the challenge of cheering Maggey up and is totally willing to be there for her. She likes the ego boost she gets from Maggey thinking she's cool.
Penny Nichols: A pretty cool gal who Maya still considers a good acquaintance and with whom she hangs out with to chat about Samurai stuff from time to time.
Diego Armando: She doesn't really know him, though she remembers him from before his coma. She does know that her sister loved him and that what he did, he did to save and protect her. She feels indebted to him and wants to get to know him, even though he's in prison.
Bikini: Though not strictly a relation, Bikini's part of her extended, spiritual family. She likes Bikini a lot, though she hasn't spent that much time with her.
[Enemies:] Maya's not really the "having enemies" type... She doesn't really consider even the aunt that tried to kill her a bunch of times her enemy, so much as feel bad that Morgan was so misled as to believe that killing Maya would make Pearl happy. Melodramatically speaking, she considers herself an ally of justice to whom all villains are the enemy, but in practice it's a lot less simple than that. There are a few people who've made her list, though, mostly ones who've hurt Nick or Pearly.
Richard Wellington: This guy tried to kill Nick while she wasn't around! She's totally glad he's in prison.
Matt Engarde: He got her kidnapped and murdered someone, and got Nick all mixed up in his stupid scheme! If she ever hears from this guy again, it'll be too soon.
Mimi Miney: She faked being Maya in order to try to get her convicted for murder. GRRR.
Xin Eohp, I mean Furio Tigre: A creep who faked being Nick to get her friend Maggey convicted of murder.
[Other:] So MANY. Maya's got an ok memory for memorable people but a bad memory for unmemorable people. If someone's not her friend or an enemy, they probably haven't made much of an impression on her.
CHARACTER
[General personality:] Maya is a creature of extreme emotions. Most of the time she's happy and energetic, some of the time she's angry, and very rarely she's despondent. She throws herself into her moods whole-heartedly, and the same goes for anything that happens to catch her eye at the moment. On the other hand, she has a pretty short attention span. She's not the tidiest person around, and she's a bit of a klutz. On the other hand, she's fiercely loyal to those she cares about and very caring. She looooves burgers, ramen, and let's face it, practically any kind of food as long as Nick's paying. She doesn't like to practice or study very much, but she knows that if she doesn't, she starts to feel down about how badly she's doing with channeling. Lately she's been doing a lot better with that. And of course, she loves the kind of entertainment that gets the blood boiling, like the Steel Samurai and all of his various knockoffs!! (Though she's understandably not much of a Nickel Samurai fan.)
[Appearance:] Pretty much the same!
[Background:] Maya was born in Kurain village and she lived a pretty happy, charmed life as the second daughter of the Master. She didn't have all the pressure of learning to be the Master and everyone in the village treated her nice. Unfortunately, her father passed away when she was very young, and at the age of two her mother left the village so she was left with only her sister and aunt. They took good care of her, but when her sister left to become a lawyer, she had to fend for herself pretty often. She didn't mind and eventually became a pretty independent girl, but she saw her sister as often as she could and played with her baby cousin as much as her aunt would allow her.
When her sister was murdered, she and Nick were thrust together by fate, and they became an unstoppable team! Together they solved lots of crimes until she lost faith in herself at the end of State v Edgeworth, and went back home. When she got her first summoning job, she had Nick come to watch her... A lucky break since it ended up being another murder case! She came back to the city with Pearly, more or less to keep Pearl from being upset that her mother was in prison. It kind of backfired, since Pearl started to be upset about the fact that Maya was kidnapped by a killer! Thankfully, Nick and Pearly saved the day, and then Maya left the city for a while to make sure Pearl was settled in. In other words, for the last couple of years she's spent more time in the city than Kurain, which has come back to bite her now that her mother's passed away and she's got to take responsibility for the goings on at the village.
