Title: Little Bit Strange But Still Special
Author: Feygan
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Anita Blake
Pairing: Spike/Xander
"What did you say?" Anita's voice was a low growl. Her eyes narrowed warningly.
"Nothing. Nothing. He said nothing!" Xander said loudly. "We just wanted to live quietly, that's all. There was nothing nefarious happening, I promise. We've just been living in a crappy apartment and working and not bothering anyone because living normal lives, that's what we've been doing."
The look she gave him screamed disbelief. But before she could say anything, Jean-Claude stepped in.
"Why didn't you announce your presence in my territory?" He raised a brow, an elegant arch that didn't take away from the dark intensity of his gaze. He was displeased that they'd lied to him, through omission or otherwise, but until he knew the limits of their strength he was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. At least until he decided that their usefulness was outweighed by whatever danger they might have brought him.
Xander really didn't want to find out what would happen if Jean-Claude decided they were useless to him. He tightened his grip on the back of Spike's shirt, hoping that his "Don't get us killed" message conveyed itself clearly.
"We didn't know we had to, did we?" Spike said, his tone smooth and deep. It was his liar's voice, the one that seduced seemingly without effort. Even those that knew him found it hard to resist. It usually sent a tingle down Xander's spine, but tonight he was purely nervous.
There was a feeling about Jean-Claude, a sense that he wasn't going to be buying any bullshit. From the emotionless mask of his face to the sharp blue of his eyes, Jean-Claude seemed more ready to call for their painful murders than to let himself be seduced by Spike's sexy voice.
"I'm sure that once you were here a short while that someone notified you of the proper way of things." Jean-Claude made a moue of displeasure. "Once you knew there was a proper protocol to follow, you should have announced your presence."
"We were scared, weren't we? Two handsome blokes such as ourselves being brand new to your city and your world. Besides, playing human is fun, innit? I know Xander here really likes it. Don't you, pet?"
Xander startled. "Oh, yeah, sure. One hundred percent humanlike bloke right here. There's nothing funner than being the normal guy. Hurray for the Zeppo." At Spike's look, he reigned himself in with a last "Yippee for humans."
"Hm. And yet I feel as though neither of you would have revealed your true nature if events had not conspired against you." Jean-Claude steepled his hands together. "I wonder what apology gift could possibly make up for such an... oversight."
"What, you want presents?" Xander blurted, then wished he'd kept his mouth shut. That was not a nice smile at all. He wished Jean-Claude would aim it at someone else.
"I think I need an adult," Xander whined, stepping half behind Spike.
"Tch." Spike rolled his shoulders. His presence suddenly seemed larger in the room, too much to be ignored or overlooked. "We were going visiting, now weren't we? We didn't bring anything more than the clothes we were wearing. Not to say we couldn't come up with something if given enough time, but we all know that money and shiny rocks aren't the best benefit of having us around."
"And yet you haven't truly explained why you look so much like Sweet William," Asher said. "Angelus may not have caught your lie, but I do not believe your story of Doppelgangers." Through the masking fall of blond hair, his look was pure skepticism.
"You caught us. We look similar because we're probably related." Spike shrugged. "My family has always had some handsome members. I wouldn't be surprised if one of them didn't take a liking to one of Sweet William's ancestors."
And there's not a single lie, Xander thought. Though it wasn't exactly the truth either, but that was just cutting hairs. Spike and Sweet William had started out as the same man, they'd just been Turned by different kinds of monsters.
"You did not seem overly fond of your relative," Jean-Claude said.
Spike scoffed. "That wanker? Anyone willing to follow after Angelus for more than two hundred years has to have some serious issues by now. Besides, he was as ready as the rest of them to go after Xander. He didn't earn himself no favors from me."
Behind his back, Xander rolled his eyes. Sure, he might have needed some saving from the Scourge of Europe, but that didn't mean Spike had to treat him like a delicate lady or anything. He'd been willing to throw down once he got his hand on a weapon.
