The Kid is an asshole. I don't know how it happened, but he is a grade-A, genu-whine asshole. All he wants to do is watch YouTube videos of people playing video games or committing pranks. That or he's playing video games or sitting around because he's "bored."
He's supposed to read 30-minutes everyday for his English class, yet most of the time he doesn't do it. Then when I tell him that he is to get it done, he starts pouting and acting like a baby. Seriously, the kid is 11-nearly-12 years old, yet he carries on like he's a toddler or something.
For his English class he was given a writing assignment that he got a D on. With my help--where I basically had to rewrite everything for him--he managed to get his grade up to an A-. As a result I've given him a little writing assignment--500 words on a subject that he loves, that weird Five Nights At Freddy's game.
He acted like I was killing him. Pouting, kicking the wall, backtalking me until I wanted to snatch him up. It got so bad that I've taken his Kindle away for a day and I threatened to take it away for a week, then a month, then I was shaking with rage and threatened to break it with a rock when he just would not STOP. ("I will break everything that you own!")
Ugh. Kids suck.
And this kid sucks so bad that from now on he's going to be receiving weekly writing assignments and he will be doing his daily reading. He will become a better, more productive person even if I have to turn him into a complete Luddite.
Seriously, the Kid doesn't even know how to use Google. He watches millions of videos about stupid things, yet I ask him to look up one single thing and it's like "How do I do that?" Uh, you call up Google and you enter a search term? Duh.
Don't even get me started on his terrible handwriting. Can you believe they don't teach cursive in schools anymore? What's up with that? ("I can't read this old-timey writing. What does it say?" "Uh, it says that you're an ignorant naif and the world is going to eat you alive. Learn how to read!") They don't even have the kids practice their printing. I mean, if that's all you're going to have them write, shouldn't you at least ensure that it's readable?
I realize that texting and typing are what's used 99% of the time by most people, but doesn't anyone leave a simple paper note anymore? Wouldn't you want someone to be able to read "So-and-so called to say you've won a million dollars. The phone number is..."?
Ignorance is not an excuse for being ignorant. The Kid is going to learn something or he's never going to play another video game ever again. He can hate me all he wants; he's going to be successful in life whether he likes it or not.
