I have two best friends, so I consider myself to be very lucky, though they couldn't be more different.
Lois Lane is one. She's half my age and not a thing like me, but she's just about the greatest friend anyone could ask for. She dropped into my life so unexpectedly, and yet you'd never know it. I met her for the first time at the hospital. She was jabbering away like a nicotine addict without cigarettes, and I was just trying to get away as fast as I could. Not a few days later, she was living with us, and driving my son crazy. That was ages ago, and in the time since she's been both a daughter and a chief of staff. And even now she's still an absolute champion of a best friend in every way. I don't know where I'd be without her.
The other is Lionel Luthor. Fifteen years after our lengthy love affair, we seem to have been...thrown into friendship. To be honest, for awhile there, I wasn't sure we could pull it off. Too much history, and more than that, too much chemistry. Yet I find that even now he knows me better than anyone in the world. He's still learning about the person I am now, but he's an expert on the person I'll always be. The mutual understanding we've always had has kept us from letting our diferences get in the way. And that was what drew us together, all those years ago. A rare undestanding, a surprise connection. It'll always be there, no matter what our relationship is or evolves into.
