AU because my mistress insisted it be so.^^
"Do you know where they are?"
"Do you care?"
He steepled his fingers as he thought about it a moment. "I do."
"That's a shame," she answered, stretching on the lounge chair in his study.
"I love her."
"Don't you think I love him?"
"I doubt you love him in the same manner I love her."
She laughed and brought her cup to lips before answering him. "You underestimate my capacity to love? You, of all people, I thought would not make such a mistake."
"I apologize," he inclined his head, smiling at her.
"You are a silly boy."
"A boy?"
"Indeed, for if you were a man, you would not be so silly."
He chuckled into his tea. "I suppose."
She sighed and emptied her cup. He leaned forward, picking the teapot up and offered her some more tea. She held her cup out but did not sit up. He stood and walked towards her, carrying the teapot carefully. He filled her cup, trying not to feel awkward at the knowledge that she was watching him. He looked up at her once he had finished his chore.
"Yes?"
"You do not wonder?"
"About?"
She smiled.
"No."
"You are a boy," she affirmed.
"I am not."
"Prove it."
He replaced the teapot on the table between them before he turned to her. "Do you mean?"
"What do you think I mean?"
He raised an eyebrow at her, but smiled. She returned the smile as she finally sat up and handed her cup to him. He took it and placed it beside the teapot. She held her hands out for him and let him help her rise.
He kissed the top of her head as she leaned it against his shoulder. Her eyes were closed and she seemed content for the moment. He raised his head when the grandfather clock in the hallway beyond chimed the hour.
"What time did she tell you she would return?"
"Six."
She sighed softly before she straightened up. She stroked the side of his face gently. "May I see you again?"
"As often as you can," he answered.
There was a small hesitation before she allowed herself to kiss him.
And then, she was gone.
