There was the sound of a door closing. Lily sat up in bed. She looked at the bed across from her. It was empty. She sighed and stood up, pulling the sheets off Rosalind as she went. "It's empty. Let's go."
Rosalind grunted unhappily at being woken up at two in the morning, but she didn't want to have Lily go alone. She grabbed her stuffed pink hippo and followed Lily out of their bedroom and into the one next door. Lily and Rosalind tiptoed towards the bed in the far corner and slid past the hangings, crawling into bed beside Rose. Rose sniffed.
"What?"
"Don't cry, Rosie," Lily said, snuggling against her older cousin.
"I brought Amun," Rosalind offered the pink hippo. Rose took it and tucked it under her chin. "Now, stop crying, my dear. Men are never worth it."
"Uh-huh," Lily agreed.
"Rose, do you want to--"
"No."
"You don't even know--"
"No."
"Will you let me fi--"
"No!" Rose slammed her book close and stood up. Scorpius caught her arm.
"What is wrong with you?" he hissed.
"What do you care?!" Rose retorted angrily, wrangling her arm out of his grip.
"Rose."
"Go away, Scorpius."
"You know I'm not the kind that will beg," Scorpius began as a preamble, falling onto the grass gracefully.
"I know," Rose answered, continuing her letter to her mother. The one that wasn't in love with Scorpius Malfoy.
"So, here it is. I'm going to ask you to the Yule Ball. If you say no, I will ask someone else," Scorpius said plainly.
Rose sighed and looked up. "I have a thousand reasons to say no, just off the top of my head. And, if prompted, I could think up a thousand more. I only have one reason to say yes and it's hardly good enough."
"Is this a no, then?"
"You make it seem like you really care what I think," Rose said bitterly.
"Why? Don't you think I do?"
"Another thousand reasons to think you don't," she replied, folding her letter.
"Well, Rose, if I didn't care what you thought, I wouldn't have asked. Now, give me a straight answer, will you or won't you?"
She turned to Scorpius. "If only I really believed that you wanted to go with me because you liked me, I'd say yes in a heartbeat."
"Let me guess," Scorpius said, rolling his eyes. "A thousand reasons you don't believe I want to go with you because I like you."
Rose shook her head and watched their Bulgarian guest return to his ship from the castle with a contented smile on his face. "No, just one."
