Commission: Valentine Event

Since yesterday earlier was a longer post I decided to seperate things. Obviously I'm not "cool" with LJ html just yet. Hmm.. I need lessons..

Around Christmas time Jardine's father, Mr. Bruce, asked me if I would be interested in creating an illustration for their church's Valentines Day event. Apparently last year they used the classic picture from Lady and the Tramp of the dogs eating spaghetti. So this year they wanted something original. I said yes, because I need something to work on, and they were giving me a few months to work on it. As it got closer to the date I started thumbnails of Valentine oriented things. The church is called St. Clemens: By the Sea. So the first thing that pops into my head is to do something aquatic. I loved the thought of drawing mermaids. They can easily still show human emotion including romance. Since Mr. Bruce asked it to be romantic and more classy, I thought why not? It did occur to me that mermaids might be too taboo, but luckily it is an Episcopalian church. Mr. Bruce said mermaids were just fine, phew! So yeah, I procrastinated on coloring it until the night before it was due(yesterday), and got stuck on a few concerns. I didn't know where my design was going to be featured. What is going to be inside, back, or front of the program? Was it suppose to be more like an illustration or a graphic design? I talked to out with Mr. Bruce and my design will be on the front cover of the program! Cool, no? So I finished it and emailed it to Mr. Bruce.

First here is the version I sent to him. The colors are more saturated and more separated. I thought it would suite the church better, and plus put a heart in there for Valentine's Day. The mermaid and merman are suppose to be shaping a heart, but I wasn't sure if people would get that.

Here is the second version. This is how I wanted it; more monochromatic with the colors, a bit more detail. I added rock formations, more highlights on the merpeople fish parts and hair.

I found these bubble brush tools while working on this project, and they are too much fun. I got them from here: http://www.brusheezy.com/.

So Yay for commissions! Maybe I will get more after this Valentine's event at the church. I plan to be there, as long as I get the day off from work. :D
