Shippou scampered along the forest floor, happily gathering acorns. He grinned mischievously. The ones he’d found today would work wonderfully to play a brilliant trick on that baka InuYasha.
Giggling at the thought of what pranks he would pull on the hanyou, he jumped over a log and ran face first into something hard.
Looking up he gulped when he saw what or rather whom he’d run into. Of all the beings in the forest why did he have to run into this one? Did the Kami’s hate him?
One thing was for sure; none of his tricks would help him now.
---
He ran quickly, his small legs carrying him as quickly as he could. He had to get away from there. He had to. It was too much for the young kit... way too much.
First, he'd nearly gotten purified when the woman who shared his Mama's soul cloaked him so his friends couldn't see or hear him. His screams never got through to them, and when the cloak fell, it was far too late.
Why didn't Miroku sense them? Why didn't Inuyasha smell or hear them? How could they be left so defenseless, then... then...
The kit shook his head, and despite his exhaustion, he ran through the night toward the old miko Kaede's village. He needed her. He needed someone to help him.
"Shippou?" the old woman asked when the forest-battered kitsune ran into her hut. "What ails ye? Where are Kagome and the others?"
The child broke down crying. "Lady Kaede, it was terrible! Naraku was in the forest with-with-with," he panted rapidly, managing to blurt out the words, "Kikyou! And they-they... they put a cloak on me and and they killed Mama and Inuyasha and Sango and Miroku and Kirara and Lady Kaede what do I do now?!" he sobbed.
The miko took a moment to take it all in. "Naraku was with Kikyou in the forest?" she prodded. When the kitsune nodded rapidly, she continued, "And they put a cloak on ye, then killed everyone?" Once more, the kit nodded rapidly, his tearful green eyes shining up at her. She frowned, taking him into her arms, carefully stroking his mangled hair with her old hands.
"They... they made me watch, Lady Kaede," Shippou whimpered, burrowing into her.
Sighing, Kaede held him closer. "Do not fret, Shippou. We will give them a proper burial. I am sorry you had to watch such a thing." Despite comforting the disturbed and terrified child, she, too, was scared. With Inuyasha, Kagome, and their friends gone, it wouldn't be long before their world would be plunged into darkness...
