at least that is how the saying goes, isn't it? I just found out that a friend of mine from my childhood killed himself not too long ago - hanged himself, I guess. He was out here on the east coast and was using crack. A few friends tried to get him some help and moved him out of the circle of people that he was hanging out with and sent him to California...where he got involved with meth. I guess there was also an issue with a girl. Life got too hard and suicide was his ace up his sleeve.
Sometimes it seems that the people that I grew up with were somehow cursed. I know that need not necessarily be the case - more likely, it is simply a case of a group of people who make poor decisions, which lead to other poor decisions, which eventually lead to catastrophe. Still...all the people that I had as friends fell into drug addiction, alcohol abuse, suicide...to what purpose? They weren't dumb - not by any means. They were bright, creative and at their core genuinely good people. Why the suffering?
Maybe there is no overarching reason. Perhaps shit happens. You toss the dice and takes your chances and hope for the best. Or, perhaps, small decisions that are both good and lucky add up over time. Perhaps we make our own luck and that if caution, and an eye to the future, is maintained, the end result is a stable and balanced life with minimal suffering.
