Happy New Year everyone! Time to forgive and let go of the sins of the past, making plans to do better next year.
I actually like the Jewish New Year better than the secular one- it seems more like a new start and beginning. The school year has just started (a HUGE change in my house of a teacher, MS library aide, and munchkin), the seasons are turning from summer to fall, foods are changing and the harvest is here. In January, well, it's just after Christmas and convenient to have an extended holiday, but it's the middle of term and even finances don't happen then.
Even more than that, the meaning of Rosh Hashanah is so much more- it's not just about new beginnings for yourself, you are supposed to look over the mistakes you have made in the past year, especially those you have made in regards to other people. Apologise, make up for them, vow to try harder in the year to come to treat people with more respect. All of these things are values that we could use more of these days.
So, make your apologises to those you have offended or harmed over the year. Tell your sins and your hopes to a stone. Throw your mistakes over running water or send them into the wilderness on a goat. And eat apples and honey in hopes of a sweet new year. Good luck to you.
Shana tova!
