still haven't taken maya on board. I got side-tracked by the pink book on my shelf and decided to read more of oscar wilde - it has been so much fun! He's so insightful and cutting about society. And delightfully camp - that whole era seemed so indulgent and they seemed to be going to gorgeous parties and calling on people and having tea and talking about these wonderful scandals.
I read the importance of being earnest - so incredibly funny. I read An Ideal Husband, not so funny but very moralistic, I read the ballad of Reading Gaol which I LOVED - it just hooks you in from the start:
He did not wear his scarlet coat
for blood and wine were red.
And blood and wine were on his hands
when they found him with the dead.
I just love all the allusions to red. It's so sad and ominous sounding.
And then his childrens stories are so beautiful as well - the happy prince who was no longer "useful" when he was no longer beautiful, and the nightingale that gave it's life-blood to make a red rose for the student who treated it carelessly... all the children stories are so depressing but so beautiful at the same time.
