sunburn in february?

Feb 13, 2006 02:19

the weather here is ridiculously wonderful. yesterday we went up to indian rock and sat in the sun and knitted. well, crocheted and knitted. it was so gorgeous... but kind of hot actually. my arms were honestly getting sunburned.

friday night, lara and i went to see 9 parts of desire - a one-woman play. it was pretty intense. she interviewed lots of women in iraq and then told their stories in the characters of 9 different women. the stories were very disturbing mostly and sad... and the way that she kept changing characters was sort of discombobulating. she was an amazing actress though, the way she was able to act so distinctly different in each character. a particularly disturbing character that she played was a doctor who talked about births of two headed babies, babies without heads, other deformities and cancer in children. she said toddlers were getting breast cancer. she said that children would find bullets with depleted uranium and wear them in necklaces. it was impossible to comprehend witnessing what has happened in iraq. she provided opinions on both sides of the war - the doctor describing some of the effects, a woman whose daughter died when a bomb entered their bomb shelter and killed hundreds, and a woman living in london who was glad that the war happened to get rid of saddam... but the overall impression was that it is just a bad situation.

i should have done more homework this weekend... i find it hard to stay motivated and disciplined when i spend time with my sister and lara who are not in school. i just want to do fun stuff with them instead of reading.

though i am reading some interesting stuff... weber's sociology of religion and foucault's discipline and punish are both fascinating. i've posted a new "page" with my books and links to more info about the books... its going to be a hard semester but i am really interested in the topics.
