Over six years on, you hit the nail on the head. The question was indeed what to do once the house was paid off.
Fate forced my hand in that a redundancy from iiNet in mid 2009 forced me to reconsider the field of IT/ISP/Customer Service as a long term cereer. I considered, then reconsidered and took a very different path.
In the 'early hours' of 2014, I'm working through a post graduate science qualification from the University of Western Australia, with the express goal to obtain my doctorate by the end of 2017. Essentially starting a new career at age 42 is daunting, simply for the fact that it limits my capacity for advancement, but I can't help but feel a sense that a short career contributing to something worthy is better than a long career maintaining the status quo.
I'm currently scared out of my mind at both the repercussions of potential failure and potential success. But, I'm walking this frontier regardless. I figure that if you're not spending 80% of your life scared, you're not doing your potential justice.
I really wish I was as assured as the previous paragraph made me sound. I'm fucked if I know what's to come, but I willl do my darndest to make it as close to imagined as possible.
