I found out that my student loans from my undergrad need to be paid off starting in January. Ummmm. I cant afford it because IM STILL A FULL TIME STUDENT. But they dont care. Its 90 months after the first disbursement that payments begin. I could apply for 2 more 6-month deferments, but have to do that one at a time, and even then, I'd still be in school when that's up.
So, Ive decided to take out loans to pay off loans. Now that is the most idiotic thing Ive ever heard of. But at the very least, Im taking out Stafford loans to pay off private PNC Bank loans, which means I can (hopefully) consolidate them all at a lower rate when im done, since they are federal loans.
But jeezus, how is someone supposed to get a phd? Its not like they pay me enough here. And its not like my parents were loaded and could just hand me $12k a year for college.
It just blows my mind. It makes me feel like this country doesnt want smart people to get higher education, or that science is some sort of rich-man's-hobby. And people moan and complain that no one is doing anything about global warming or the energy crisis, but the truth is that there are fewer people than that are needed working on it, because only idiots (apparently) would go into tens of thousands of dollars worth of debt to help solve the world's problems. gimme a break here.
