Fear

Obviously fear seems to be a big damn issue in this country right now. So it got me thinking, what, exactly, is the RIGHT amount of fear? Like, it is stupid to be completely fearless, but being afraid of anything is rather a damper on actually doing anything. Where can one draw the line when we are told to be afraid of everything? Right now, I can confidently say I am not very worried about getting nuked or terrorist-bombed or anything like that. I am not worried that the world is about to enter WW3. But I am worried, despite my current living conditions and clear statistics, about getting stuff stolen and my car broken into and such. Though that is partly still due to my parents, I still am not sure how far is too far? Is Avian Flu worth my concern? How about over-pollution? Killer bees?
Some person told me there was some certain clause in the laws for the executive branch that say if there is an extreme crisis like a world war or something along those lines, general elections will not be held (essentially leaving our current head-of-state in his position). Should I be worried A) that this is even true, and B) that it will happen?
What it all comes down to is, how can we determine what is worth being afraid of if every tries to tell us what is?

Right now, I am afraid of exploding penguins raiding my room at night.
