Today was so warm I put on my bathing suit for the second time this spring and basked in the sun. I was just thinking about going back inside when Eileen the Duck showed up for the first time this spring. I was so glad to see her

Yep- raw food for cats. That's what they'd eat in the wild, though of course this version is a step removed from wormy rodents and lice-y birds. We got started thinking about this because of friends who have an organic farm who feed their pets only raw food from their farm. All of their pets are in amazing health.
We buy a local ground chicken mix (http://www.rawadvantagepetfood.com/) that includes some veggies in it and no grains (all organic and human grade) then I mix in a couple of supplement powders (available here: http://www.felineinstincts.com/) plus some steamed squash because one of our cats has kidney issues. We breeze it in small containers and defrost it as we go. We also feed them bits of raw beef when we have steak or other raw foods, though not raw pork.
Both cats are older, one is at least 14 and the other is at least 19. They have both taken to the new food with no trouble, the older one (a Siamese) ate it from the first while the other one took a little transition time but now chows down with enthusiasm.
They both have perked up remarkably. The younger one has taken to playing again, she's lost weight and is much calmer than she was before. The older one has gained weight (which she really needed to do) and is more active as well, though since she's pretty arthritic and was declawed (long before we got her- we're at least her third home, poor thing) she's very lame.
Their coats are amazing, especially after this second shedding of old fur. It's not cheap but they eat smaller portions more frequently (also more like what they would do in the wild) and they pee and poop LOTS less and it's not stinky.
I would never go back to commercial food again. Here's one website that helped me make this decision: http://www.truthaboutpetfood.com/
