i've faded somewhat from my church in eau claire, but it's a united church of christ (UCC). and, over the fourth of july weekend, the leader of UCCs around the nation met in atlanta and
decided to endorse gay marriage. this by no means forces any of the UCC congregations to wed gay couples, and it's not legal anyway, but the UCC has 1.3 million members, and i'm frankly blown away. way to go, UCC meeting.
i spent the 4th at the cottage with friends and had the traditional pontoon float parade. we pulled out all the stops and got third. i watched the duluth fireworks on kat's dad's boat in the harbor. sweet.
NOTE: the article linked above is new york times article, but i don't think you need to register to see it. if you do, please do it. the comments from it are the only story on the web that give this decision justice. i guess i should include a few select quotes here, from the article:
""On this July 4, the United Church of Christ has courageously acted to declare freedom, affirming marriage equality, affirming the civil rights of gay--of same-gender--couples to have their relationships recognized as marriages by the state, and encouraging our local churches to celebrate those marriages," Mr. Thomas said at a news conference after the vote by the General Synod."
