meme time, y'all.

Comment on this entry and I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can satisfy my curiosity. Update your journal with the answers to the questions. Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions.

I'll reply here as my journal has locks all over most of it.

1. I'm Raven to most who know me in real life - that is by no means my real name, but I am planning to change it before I get married, as that's the name I hold most significance by. I'm a tiny terror of 4ft10 but the first thing people notice nowadays are the tits and the teeth. I'm an artist by nature (bad at drawing and writing and music but I persevere), but I study astrophysics. I am a melancholy slut who loves fanworks and writing original fiction and is far too blonde for her skincolour. And I can't count to 100.

2. You are too kind. :) I feel I have a long way to go before I am truly a good pianist, technically at least, but I'm good enough to blur my mistakes enough that most cannot hear me wincing. The experience of playing the piano? It's fear, wonderment, panic, awe, and sheer glee all in one. It's knowing that you are the one in charge for once, and even if there's no one to hear, the world stops for you in those moments. When people listen, they're not watching you, or how you wince with every mistake, every wrong note, they're immersing themselves in your world, how you are the one telling the tale. Also - I am a bit of an attention whore when it comes to music - and knowing that I have people watching makes it even more so, but before my brain allows me to go on a giant egotrip, my embarassment/omgyoucametowatchmeIamsograteful! kicks in. I love hearing different interpretations of tunes that I'm familiar with, and knowing other people do as well, and that they're willing to sit through half an hour of that...it really warms my heart. Why do I play the piano? For all of the above. But also because I was forced into playing it when I was 4, and after having classically been trained for 7 years, I got fed up and decided that composition was more fun than Schubert, and well, it was one more way of flipping two fingers up at every other kid playing the same thing. 'I'm not going to be the same as you, and get used to it.' It's just magical, creating something new and fantastical in a soundscape. If I ever stopped playing, if my fingers were cut off, if I became stone deaf, I think I'd probably lose part of my soul.

3. If I could play piano for the rest of my life - do anime/game/film concerts, play my own compositions, release CDs, play in an orchestra, play at rock festivals with my own band, I would be set for life. It's just not feasible to assume I'm good enough to make it big, and the number of people with the same dream as me is huge. Statistically, I'm just one in a thousand million with the same pipe dreams. I plan to continue playing small concerts at conventions though, and will one day record some original compositions on a CD, whether or not I keep it for myself or take it to a record label. Astrophysics is my backup plan for now.

4. The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service (manga)- black humour, corpses, supernatural shit, freaking scary in bits, and good old Japanese urban legends. Amazing stuff. Kooky in all the right places.

Revolutionary Girl Utena (anime and film) - ...where else would you get homosexuality, magic, illusion, witches, incest, roses and pretty dresses? The themes in this are many, the characters are flawed, the dresses are gorgeous, the animation is unique. The music is beautiful. The ending was...mindblowing. I can't really describe Utena, but it's such a mindfuck I can't help but love it. Plus, lesbians. Or implied. And swordfighting. Did I mention the dresses?

I can't think of another one that I'd place right up there with these two, so I'll add a random one from my I LOVE IT list that's not very well-known.
