-The Land Of The Not Right-
Lightning lit up the sky and thunder shook my bed as I rolled over and stuffed my head under my pillow. The latest storm had been raging for the last hour and I had been woken up at least three times. Sitting up I punched my pillow, growling as I flipped it cool side up. Leaning against my headboard I looked out my window into the night sky at the lightning as it flashed once more. I counted the seconds until the thunder shook the glass in my window frame. Seven seconds, seven miles away. I don’t know why but it reassured me that somehow I was safe, from the lightning at least.
I must have dozed off because I woke as I fell over. The wind had picked up and was howling through the cracks in the window frame.
Something was odd about my room, like someone had stolen everything and replaced it with exact replicas that were in some way wrong. Like a pictures eyes were looking in the wrong direction, or a statue I had of a mermaids wrong arm was raised. It was odd, like it was my room, but not.
Rain fell upon my window while lightning continued to flash in this land of the not right. I thought I must be dreaming so I picked up a book by my bed and read the first page, then looked away for a second then back, but the words stayed the same. So I wasn’t dreaming. I placed the book back down as something began to skitter a crossed the hard wood floors of my room. Small chattering sounds began to emanate from under my bed, almost squirrel like chitter was being spoken by more then two distinct voices.
Slowly I moved down the end of my bed and took a hold of the blankets and just as lightning flashed yet again I stuck my head over the edge of the bed and yanked the blankets up, and in that brief second of light I caught sight of three somethings that may have been stuffed animal, until one turned its head and squeaked and I gasped and fell off my bed. The sound of claws scrambling on wood reached my ears as I quickly climbed back onto my bed and pressed my back against the wall my bed was against. Reaching a hand to the lamp standing on my bookcase headboard my hand shook terribly, but my light refused to turn on. Now I was stuck in my dark room with three little creatures that may or may not want to hurt me. Clutching the stuffed cat I slept with I listened intently for the chittering. It didn’t start very loud at first, but you could still hear it. All in unison, the same warbled words, not chitters or chatters, but hushed words. I was finding it hard to stay awake, the words were so calming I found it hard to stay awake, I found myself slipping down the wall to lay on my bed. Trying to keep my eyes open as I felt something crawling up my blanket to the foot of my bed.
I looked and what I saw was cat-like in appearance, but with a mouth stretching from ear to ear, giving it a flip-top-like head, several rows of sharp little teeth glinted in the light of the lightning as its black forked tongue lulled out of its mouth as it came closer to me. My eyes grew heavier with each step it took toward me, its two long, fluffy tails swishing back and forth. In my sleep daze I reached a hand out to it, to touch its soft white fur. My hand fell to the bed as sleep over took me.
In what felt like seconds that were actually hours I woke once more, to the sound of scratching at my bedroom door. Body feeling heavy I crawled off my bed and stood, swaying slightly. The storm had passed in the night and predawn light was spilling in my window. Opening my door I let my cat inside. He seemed intent on sniffing everything, like any other morning, but today I watched him carefully. He went under my bed growling and clawing at the floor boards. Getting on my hands and knees I looked under my bed and gasped at what I saw. A hand full of pure white fur was caught on a nail. Pulling it from the nail I ran my fingers through the silken hairs. It was almost as soft as rabbits fur. Opening the drawer on my night stand I dropped the fur inside and shoved the drawer closed. Pulling my black cat out from under the my bed I left my room, walking down the hall way I dropped him as I entered the kitchen. No one else seemed to be awake at the time so I turned on the computer and searched for anything that might have been the creatures. Hours passed and true dawn came and went, but by almost 9 am I found something. It was a web site with details about dreams and the dreaming state, about how you can be awake but your mind is dreaming. That state when you’re on the edge of sleep, how you hear things and see things that you can’t or don’t when awake. The page gave information about the creatures you see -called Lornie’s by the person who wrote the site- that are spirit animals that guard over your sleep, and keep you safe, but when the animals are lazy, or just mean, a person will sleep walk or talk. It said it’s a rare occasion that you can catch them, that you wake up when they are around, and they don’t run away for good. It also said that if you see them once there’s a chance you’ll see them again, if they want you to.
I didn’t tell anyone about what I saw, of the web page, just so they didn’t think I was making things up, or just going insane, but that night I tried to control my sleep, but I didn’t see them, but that’s not to say I’ll never see then again.
