I missed alot of music as a kid.
I was wandering YouTube watching various things (alot of Wil Wheaton speeches, that man's a Genius) and I stumbled across
this. Go on and take a listen, I'll wait.
Ok, so that's an awesome version of Where the Streets Have No Name right? And I noticed in the description of the video that they did an entire Buegrass Cover album of The Joshua Tree. (one of my musical fascinations is music done in completely different styles from the originals, e.g.
this,
this, and
this)
Having seen that my interest was piqued and I went out and got that album. And while listening to it I realized that, this is my first time hearing most of the songs on this album. (exceptions being Where the Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, With or Without You, and Sweetest Thing) That gave me pause, because it's The Joshua Tree. I'm not some big music
aficionado (I have however turned into a bit of a youtube nut lately :P) but I know enough about U2 to know that The Joshua Tree is the U2 album. I can't even think of another U2 album name off the top of my head.
And I started thinking about music, and how behind on music I've always been. For example, I'd never really heard a Metallica song until I was in High School. I mean, I'm sure I heard them on the radio every so often, but not enough that I could even have identified Metallica if they were playing something.
Thinking back to my Childhood, my parents did listen to music. Almost never the radio though. When I was little I remember my mom playing Cher & Rod Stewart and my dad playing things like Paul Simon & Jim Croce (I still giggle listening to
the Ball of Kerrymuire very NSFW) Then they went through a Country stage, and for about 4 years if I didn't want to listen to Alan Jackson or Garth Brooks I had to retreat to my room and put Wierd Al on my walkman. (cause I don't care how out of the musical loop you were, you knew Weird Al) Then they went into a Frank Sinatra/Rat Pack age that they've never really emerged from. That's still the type of music they play when I go home for a visit.
Now, none of that is bad music, In fact I have examples of all of the above on my winamp playlist as we speak. But I'm discovering new old music all the time. In some ways it's been good, I have no real preference in music. There are songs I don't like, but I'm not one to say "Oh, I can stand {insert genre}, and refuse to listen to it." I have some rap, some "pop" (or at least it was pop at the time), metal, alternative, country, classical (Pachelbel's Canon s still one of my favorite musical pieces), comedy. Heck I even have stuff by
William Shatner. (which is a genre all its own, I think)
Last summer I went to Folk Fest with Laura (I believe there's a post where I babble on about that somewhere a few pages back if you look) and discovered Bruce Cockburn, who's since become one of my favorite artists. Before I saw The Watchmen I'd only ever really heard Rolling Stone and Mr Bojangles by Bob Dylan, I've since found a bunch more music by him (though I'm not a huge fan).
Of course, I'm not necessarily alone. I remember in college I was hanging out with Jen & Phil and Living on the Edge by Aerosmith came on the radio. And Jen commented on how much she liked the song and, maybe prompted by the looks on our faces, asked Phil if he'd ever heard it before, he nodded, then she asked me. I said "Yes, but only as Living in the Fridge by Weird Al." She just made this disappointed noise and hung her head, then Phil piped up: "Uh... actually."
I dunno, I don't really have a point in all this, just thinking about stuff, and what's the point of having a journal if you don't put stuff like this in it. Anyways, just for fun, I'm gonna hit "next" on my Winamp a few times, let's see what comes up. :)
