Good old Sydney.
On 5 January 1789, William Fraser, who worked as a blacksmith, admitted saying to Sergeant Martin Connor, 'You can kiss my arse'. He was sentenced to 100 lashes, but forgiven all but 25 by the governor.
On 16th January 1789, Tamasin Allen (described at the Old Bailey as 'a lustyish woman with black hair') received 50 lashes for buying a stolen shirt.
On 20 January 1789, Samuel Barsby and William Bond received sentences of 300 lashes and 150 lashes respectively, for being drunk.
"There are no surviving contemporary depictions of flogging at the settlement. The early floggings at Sydney Cove were described as being 'at the cart's tail'; the victim was probably tied to a cartwheel or to the raised back of a cart. The lash was a cat-o'-nine tails, with nine knotted leather strands at the end of a short whip; after the first few strokes the knots began to bite the flesh.
