Work was more interesting than usual during the last two weeks.
The hospital is previewing new software systems that would entail every department in the organization. There have been three so far, with each department being shown the programming applicable to them in batches of two-hour long seminars. Granted, a person cannot do an adequate job of determining how effective a new program is from such a short time. However, it did serve as an excellent way to show me how pitiable the current system really is. I always knew that it was archaic, but I did not have anything to compare it to. It is worse than I thought.
For some reason, Materials Management did not get a seminar with the first software company. The two subsequent ones, however, I did get to go to. The second one was Windows based, and was much more user friendly. The first one was the one that I thought was a better program, despite the impression that it was more cumbersome. It almost does not matter which one the hospital gets; either one would be such an improvement as to be ridiculous.
It is also possible that things may be coming to a breaking point with regards to my two female coworkers and my immediate boss. I will not go into all of the sordid details here; suffice it to say that when any coworker storms out of the office for the day with her last line to the other including the very distinct and loud words “go fuck yourself”, it is probably safe to say that something is going to change. It is a question of when, not if.
When it does happen, I will be watching to see how poor a job my boss does with handling that situation. To an extent, I can understand the problem - his background and training for his position do not help with regards to getting what we do dragged into the twentieth century, much less the twenty-first. But when the opportunity to learn and improve is ignored, that means he is not the person for the job. Something has to give at some point, even if it is in the form of a revolving door for the department’s personnel.
