Dinner for the family

Hosted dinner for
annybird's grandmother last night. She's up from Colombia to vacation with the in-laws.

Started with home-made tortilla chips, salsa, guacamole, and black bean dip.

Then she taught me how to make the empanadas my wife will now demand on a regular basis. I tried
warriorsway's carnitas recipe, but my alternations didn't quite work the way I wanted. Managed to dry the pork out just a bit. But not so much that's inedible. And I did get an excellent sauce out of the pan drippings. Served with roasted veggies (bell peppers, squash, zucchini, onion, corn) and rice. Also served pan de yucca and fried yucca.

Dessert was annybird's - a flourless chocolate torte with a white-chocolate bourbon mousse and blackberry puree. I spiked the blackberry with a new find at the package store - a honey bourbon. Quite tasty - much like the Wallace Scotch liqour, but without the mint julip overtones.
