I've been at the Grants Pass rotation for 3 days. I heard so many bad rumors about this site, and I could not disagree more. I definitely belong in a small hospital. I hated my OHSU rotation, but this? I can breathe again. I loved Silverton, and Grants Pass is good, too. Small, all-CRNA practice. Once they figure out they can trust you, they give you quite a lot of autonomy. It's a really busy rotation, but I actually like the work and the preceptors, which counts for a lot.
I'm seeing a disturbing pattern, though. Large, heavily supervised institutions = predominantly female CRNA's. Small, autonomous, all-CRNA hospitals = predominantly male CRNA's. I talked to one of the guys here about it, and he said that large institutions are sometimes vocal in their preference for women, because they feel that women are easier to control and more confortable having someone else tell them what to do. He said, "You have to be a little guy-like to work at a place like this." Aw, hell. Sign me up.
