Ornatos Violeta
Don't really know why I'm posting this, since it's a portuguese band and all. Thing is, I've loved this band since my teens, but at the time they were high up there I wasn't old enough to go to gigs alone and I had no one to go with. So, in 2002 they finished the band and I was so sad... I've never got to see them live. The lead singer, Manel Cruz, that I find absolutely divine (in a way that I find Matt Bellamy divine, it's not about the looks) had several projects over teh years, and I got to see him live a few times. He's one of the best portuguese lyricists ever...
Anyway, Ornatos Violeta was always special because the five of them seemed to have a great bond together but because they wanted to experiment new stuff they decided to follow different ways,
At the time they were asked quite a few times if they would come back because the fans really wanted to and they always answered that, even though they felt honoured after so many requests, that would be unlikely and they were sure that the requests would fade with time. They were so wrong... No one really knows why but their fan base grew over the years. There was no band for the last 10 years and yet, there were more and more fans.... Just how unbelievable is that??
So, earlier this year, they announced that they finally gave up to so many requests and they would do five gigs. One of them was last Friday, I was there and.... there are still no words. It was a summer festival and it was completely full... Now you have to know that the main names of Portuguese festivals are not Portuguese, they're usually bands like Muse, The Cure, The Strokes, Arcade Fire, etc... People don't pay that much to see Portuguese bands. But these guys managed to prove the contrary. Everyone was there to see them. They were the main act of the night and it was all kinds of perfect.
I just wish they could be recognized everywhere, because they deserve it.
Probably no one will give a damn but I can help leaving here a couple of videos.
The second one was during the gig last Friday, you can barely hear the band, it's just so you get the atmosphere that was in that place.
