TWENTY-ONE

“He will be all right. As soon as he sleeps for a while and eats something.”

Matt sighed as he sat down on the bed besides Dominic, reclining against the fluffy pillows.

“But it’s not serious, then?”

“Well... yeah, it is serious. Especially considering he’s only 15, but... it’s part of the growing up processes - getting hurt, learning with his mistakes, learning to apologise... As much as it hurts to see him like that, I know that in the end I can’t do anything except being there when he needs me.”

“That’s a lot already, you know?”

“I hope so.”

Matt smiled, leaning to the side so he could face Dominic. “Thank you.”

“For what?” Dominic frowned, his hand moving to rest on Matt’s shoulder, caressing down his skin until he reached the brunet’s waist. To Matt’s surprise, the simple gesture was enough to make goose bumps appear on his skin.

“For telling me what was going on with Gabe. I suppose you don’t understand but that means a lot... For example, Paul would never do that. Sorry for comparing you both so much in my head, but... I can’t help it.”

“Well, as long as I get the favoured there shouldn’t be a problem.”

Dominic winked, scooting closer to the sculptor. Matt laughed and leaned forward to peck those full lips.

“But seriously, why wouldn’t he tell you something like that? From the things you tell me, it seems like he... he really had a serious problem with Gabriel, and considering what I’ve known about your son so far, I can’t see a reason for him to hold such a grudge.” Matt looked down at that, and for the first time, Dominic felt like there was something his partner hadn’t told him about his previous relationship. Something big. “Hey... What’s up?” Matt gulped and looked back up, taking a deep breath. “Is it me or there’s something else to that story?”

“Yeah, there is...”

“Well?” Dominic urged, feeling curious and intrigued.

“Paul wanted more...” Matt stated, shrugging.

“More...? How so?”

“He wanted us to adopt a child.”

“Oh...”

“And I simply couldn’t... We had Gabriel, and I didn’t think we could sustain another child. And I thought we didn’t need another one. To me, Gabriel was ours. Now I see that the assumption was my mistake and I didn’t have the right to think like that or try to make Paul think like that.”

There was a small silence, when Matt couldn’t look into Dominic’s eyes, subconsciously afraid of his reaction. “That was part of the reason. The other part was that... I was afraid to start again. On one hand I felt curious about doing it with a partner, but the biggest part of my mind was truly afraid.”

“That’s understandable, isn’t it?”

The soft tone of Dominic’s voice made Matt look up, and instantly smile. “I guess not... I was being irrational, but...seeing the way he reacted to my reluctance about adopting a baby, today I’m glad I didn’t venture in that with him. The way he started treating Gabriel was... sometimes disgusting. He never took his anger on me, but on my son. And that’s sick.”

“Yeah... He should have respect for the way you felt, and maybe if he acted differently, you’d change your mind eventually.”

“Probably.”

“But that would mean you guys would still be together, so I wouldn’t be here, so... my selfish mind is glad he revealed to be such a bastard.” After a small moment of silence, Matt burst out laughing. “What? It’s true...” Dominic chuckled, one leg sliding along Matt’s under the sheets.

“Yeah, it’s true...” Matt sighed.

“So, how’s it going?” Matt asked anxiously.

“They’re going to be just fine, don’t worry!” Chris winked, sitting down next to his friend. As promised, Matt took Gabriel to Chris’ place as soon as the boy managed to sleep and eat something and in that very moment, the teenagers were in Ava’s bedroom, hopefully sorting everything out.

“I know... But I still worry. I haven’t seen Gabriel like he was this morning since... since Paul left. Well, in fact I think he was worse this morning.”

“He has a good heart, they both have, so... they will be just like they were before.”

“Yeah...”

“But tell me about the dinner, details, my friend, details.”

“Juicy ones?”

“Easy!” Chris laughed. “Just by looking at that coy smile I can see that it went well.”

“It went better than I could have imagined. Of course there was the occasional awkward moment, but that’s only normal...”

“Of course. You’re really falling for this guy, aren’t you?”

Taking a moment to think, Matt realised that there was no point in trying to hide his feelings from his best friend.

“I think I already did, Chris.”

Chris laughed patting his friend on the back, “it’s kind of easy to see. So Gabe liked him?”

“Yeah, they seemed to get along just fine, even though it was just one dinner. But I get a good vibe from Dominic, you know? Especially after this morning.”

“How so?” Chris asked, tilting his head to the side. He was extremely happy for his friend, but at the same time it scared him how smitten Matt was. It felt stupid to think about it, but what if Dominic turned into another disappointment? Matt wouldn’t be able to cope with another heartbreak... However, Chris had been the one who always told Matt that he needed to get out of his shell and do his best to find a partner again because solitude didn’t suit him so it would be hypocrite to tell him to slow down now.

“Well... it’s hard to explain but... it was the way he dealt with the whole situation with Gabriel. He did more than I expected him to at this stage, actually... I ended up telling him everything about Paul, about why he truly left. Do you think it was too soon?” Matt asked, sensing Chris’ slight uneasiness.

“I don’t know enough about you guys to think this or that. If you feel that comfortable with him that’s all what matters... And I couldn’t be happier for you.”

“Thank you. I-“

“That is mine, Gabriel! Stop being a twat!!”

At first both fathers grew quite worried and serious at Ava’s scream, but when Gabriel’s laughter filled the air and they realised that was indeed one of their many little fits, not more than a joke between good friends.

“I thought you told me everything! And you’re keeping this guy from me?”

They heard them running upstairs, Ava probably chasing Gabriel to get back whatever he had in his possession.

“Nothing happened! And lower your voice, will you?” Ava hissed. “This way the whole of London will find out... Now give me back the note!”

“Aw... he’s so romantic... mind if I steal the idea?”

“Gabriel!! Stop! Or I’ll take my forgiveness back!”

Matt laughed, trying not to make any loud sounds so they wouldn’t realise both men were hearing them.

“Seems like everything went back to normal...” Chris whispered.

“Thank fuck!”

That night, even though it was Saturday, Gabriel practically passed out on his bed. He was so exhausted from everything that sleeping seemed to be the only valid option.

Matt knew his son would certainly disapprove, but he couldn’t help checking on his a few minutes after he went to bed. Smiling at the sleeping for of the teenager, Matt closed the door and sighed in relief. To be honest, he felt quite tired too... After all he hadn’t slept much the previous night - though it was for a good reason - and Gabriel’s state had affected him immensely. Luckily, everything seemed to be on the right track again.

However, Matt knew how cruel children and teenagers could be and he was a little afraid of what Gabriel would find on Monday when he got back to school. Hopefully, his worries wouldn’t turn into reality. Maybe that Caroline went home straight after messing with Gabriel, without mocking him behind his back and in front of his friends.

His somewhat pessimistic thoughts were interrupted by a soft knock on the door. Checking his watch, Matt wondered who could be at his door at 10pm. When he opened it though, he found quite a good surprise on the other side of the door.

Dominic. Holding a bottle of his favourite red wine.

Smiling sheepishly, Matt grabbed the blond by the collar of his shirt and dragged him inside as he kissed those luscious lips.

“I believe you’re happy to see me,” Dominic mumbled, touching their foreheads together.

“Only because you brought wine,” Matt teased, grabbing the bottle from him as he kissed Dominic again.

“I figured you needed to relax a bit so ta-dah! Here I am. I brought something else with me...” He added mysteriously, holding a bag that clearly belonged to a perfumery. “But you’ll have to wait and see.”

Matt smiled seductively and kissed Dominic’s jaw, moving up a little to whisper in his ear, “are you trying to turn me on?” He felt Dominic pushing him flush against his slim but muscular body, his hands roaming down to cup Matt arse trough his jeans. “Ugh... I’m so, so horny right now... how did you know I needed this so much?”

The sculptor was so straight to the point and so honest with his words that Dominic had to lean back to capture his lips in a fervent kiss. Their moans and hisses filled the air as they started making their way to Matt’s room, in a quite clumsy way.

Two thunderous orgasms later, they lay on their backs, trying to regain their breaths again until suddenly Matt started laughing.

“What are you on about?” Dominic chuckled, glancing sideways at the brunet.

“I’ve just had the silliest thought... never mind.”

“Oh please, do share!”

“Believe me you don’t want to know. It was something about Viagra...”

“What?!”

“With the amount of sex we indulge ourselves in... we’re not twenty anymore, Dom.”

Dominic smiled at that and entwined his leg with his lover’s. “You’ve never called me Dom before, you know?”

“That’s just because I find Dominic gorgeous. And it definitely suits you.”

“Sweet talker. Anyway, please let’s not talk about age, okay? It doesn’t suit us.”

“You’re right... Sorry.”

“It’s okay,” Dominic whispered, shrugging Matt’s hair from his forehead.

“Are you going to stay over?”

“I had intentions to... if you’re okay with it...”

Matt’s answer consisted in a breathtaking kiss. The fact that Dominic was willing to stay there, knowing that his son was sleeping on that very floor, a couple of doors down the corridor, was starting to speak for itself.

“And... we have lemon scented massage oil just for ourselves...” Dominic winked.
