Let me just say that I love the Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon. It's probably the best American cartoon we've had since the 80's. It has personality, heart, humor and some fantastic action.
The live action movie version has none of these. In fact it's a giant blah. Even the action scenes are blah. It didn't make me care about anything. These should be fantastic characters with strong personalities, but instead we get talking heads. Shamalamadingdong has not learned the 'show not tell' rule of filmmaking it would seem. I wanted this movie to be good, I really did. But this movie has no heart. I'm not saying don't see it, as I do wonder if they'll at least do Azula right in the next movie. But don't expect much out of it. Bah, I'm going to go back and watch my season 1 dvds again. At least that was exciting.
Other things that bothered me. Random changing of the pronunciation of names. And not even consistently throughout the movie! Ahavatar, Avatar, Ahavatar. SOka. *shudder*
The battles were so lame. I do a bit of posturing, you do a bit of posturing, well I give up then. That's how it went! Where was the impressive battle for Aang and the gang to escape Zuko's ship, leaving it damaged? Where was the ocean spirit merging with Aang at the end to kick Fire Nation butt, Zhao's in particular? They didn't even try to flesh out Katara. It was just a sad disappointment. And where were Zhao's giant mutton-chop sideburns? Does he even like cake?
The best thing about the whole experience was some cosplayers that I sold fabric to earlier that day. They drove up in a white Appa van (the side window said 'yip yip' and it had paper horns), with an Aang and Katara cosplayer sitting on the roof like it was Appa's head. That was pretty cool. Their emo fire nation friend rode in the back, inside the van. :p
