Temples and Miko and Shrines, oh my

This weekend was a three-day weekend with Health and Sports Day on Monday, but I feel like I barely had any vacation. Friday night I went to Omiwa Shrine to see the Moon Viewing Festival. It was really awesome with miko dancing and traditional instruments and sacrifices to the dead. Very big energy and spiritually wow. Afterwards the miko gave ( Read more... )

Oh, very pretty! My friend's daughter spent some time in Japan this summer, and loved it. I definitely need to add Japan to my Places I Want to Visit list.

Japan is nice because it has such different and interesting cultural attractions, but along with a high standard of living and the all-important modern conveniences. But Japanese-style toilets are a pain!

Zara (my friend's daughter) says that all fruits are peeled in Japan. She said she was eating grapes without peeling them first and people looked at her funny. Maybe it's a cleanliness thing?

Yeah grapes are peeled and apples are cut up and peeled--eating a whole one is strange. I guess it's a cleanliness thing? But then they eat whole fish heads and fried eel bones and those little fish whole.
