...you mean that weird show that's like the French Revolution on acid?

The yen for gen continues. Methos gen is like marijuana - the addiction sneaks up on you before you even admit to yourself that you've been doing it with any frequency.

But this fic.

I take my hat off to this fic. It is waaaaay too Cassandra-heavy for me to read *all* the other parts. Cassandra annoys me.

(She takes to extremes that strange predilection immortals have of acting like the centuries between their meetings never happened - as if nothing had changed in those centuries. The flashback device in Highlander encourages this, but - realistically - people *do* change over time. Immortals are no different from other people in that respect. Just look at Cullen, Byron, Darius, James Coltec, Warren *Cochrane.* Even Duncan has changed so much from the murdering, Sassenach-killing berserker he used to be. (Is it wrong to say that I liked him better then? At least he was honest.) But he persists in judging people. Didn't Darius teach him *anything* about will to change and forgiveness and God who is, hello, *not you,* Duncan - [insert rest of obvious anti-Duncan rant here].

The series seems to posit that immortals can remember an exact quote from a casual conversation that happened 1000 years ago in a dead language. OKAY FINE! (I remember being *shocked* when I read a fic where Methos couldn't remember an ancient Egyptian song or incantation that he used to sing. I had never thought to question their computer-like brains before.) But if immortals have some kind of super memory power (eternally young brains?), the writers need to *talk* about it, give us some parameters for it besides Methos's outer limit of 5000 years or so. (Speaking of parameters, can an immortal feel when another immortal *leaves* his or her presence?) Because if they don't treat it as a plot point, *I'm* going to treat it as a plot *hole.* It is just not normal for people to remember things with that much detail - even things from last *week.* So because it's unexplained, that freakish memory kind of invalidates all of the *series* writers' efforts to make us believe that immortals are just normal people whose bodies happen to live forever. Not to mention the conflict and verbal play with the immortal-from-my-past of the week.)

Erm, yes I got kind of sidetracked. The point is that this fic also assumes that Cassandra has an elastic brain, because otherwise the sheer amount of *time* that's passed since some of this trauma would have greatly reduced the effects from those shown here. I don't like to think about trauma, and many fics have the pain of remembering or flashbacks come to a head and then "heal" them. In reality, victims probably spend a long time *dwelling* on their trauma and working *really hard* for a really *long time* to get better. So although it's a little tedious to hear about Cassandra's psychoses, I admire the author for dealing with it in a more realistic way (although not enough to fully read all the non-Methos parts of the freaking huge arc). Cassandra's gross generalizations about women kind of annoy me, but feminism yay. Sisterhood goddess power!

I liked *this* part because in addition to (1.) presenting Cassandra in a realistic and sympathetic light, it (2.) blended the movieverses and seriesverse seamlessly, something which I (along with Davis-Panzer) thought was impossible, and (3.) MADE SENSE OF AHRIMAN. Kinda. But I mean wow. *That's* an accomplishment.

Mostly though I liked this part because of the Methos gen. Which was lovely and yummy. ::licks Methos:: And heh, Duncan ends up in New Zealand going back to his roots as a sheep-fuckerfarmer, which means Methos and Amanda have sex. Whoohoo. Hmm, the next part isn't bad either.

Also everyone going to Connor's house for Christmas is just the cutest idea ever. ::ruffles Connor's kilt:: ::ignores retarded movie where he kinda died::

::looks at cute cute production photos from Highlander V with guarded hope::

I think it's so sweet that Peter got teary eyed when he put on the Methos coat again (was that this movie or last?), saying hello to a dear friend, realizing Methos still lived. Awwwww.

So I was rewatching "The Messenger," and instead of just swatting at his image on the screen in annoyance, I found myself agreeing this time with the fake Methos and his ideas about love and fear ("A Course in Miracles" shout out!) and church ideals... but not his methods!

Wow this show is funnier than I remembered, with Methos's cutecute bewailing the lack of workmanship in his boots and his mission to buy socks. omg. pitterpat.

I was almost taken in by Duncan's "I'm so tired of the killing!" - Adrian did a good job.

But then I remembered: this is Duncan!

At the end of "The Valkyrie" Duncan asks, "Who judges me?" And a few episodes later (timing and continuity yay!), he and the audience both have an answer - Steven Keane!

But wait, by the end of the episode, it turns out it's not Steven Keane, but actually the GODS who judge him.

THE FATES.

...yeah.

So God was on your side all those times, Mac?

He has now the perfect excuse to CONTINUE killing.

If he's wrong, he'll die, so since he's lived, he must have been in the right all those battles. He doesn't have to question his past killings anymore, and he can now judge whomever he wants, kill whomever he wants, secure in the knowledge that as long as he wins, he's right.

I mean, Christ.

This is why I don't like Duncan.
