Last night I went to a midnight showing of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallpws, Part Two and it was a blast! The atmosphere in the theatre was fantastic; there were a lot of cosplayers (I myself was wearing a Gryffindor scarf, but nothing else fannish) and people burst into song occasionally :-P I was surprised at the number of people who came as quidditch players, mostly because I can't believe the ticket people let them in with brooms and balls.
There were also a few people in less common costumes. There was one person dressed as Fawkes, but they weren't in the same theatre as I was (there were five midnight showings at the cinema). In my theatre, though, there were two people dressed as house elves and one person dressed as Hagrid - he got A LOT of attention, I guess people really like Hagrid - and one person dressed as Trelawney. There were lots of Lunas, Harrys, and miscellaneous Hogwarts students.
Katie and I spent most of the hour and a half before the movie started brainstorming odd costumes we could have worn. Examples: the Whomping Willow, Platform 9 3/4, Neville's boggart, the Three Broomsticks, the sorting hat.
The movie itself was enjoyable, and I don't have a whole lot to say about it, specifically. I might have something to add after I see it again (last night was with my best friend, and tomorrow is with my family). However, there's one aspect of the film that I would like to briefly address. I didn't even realize this during the film, and only thought about it this morning.
They cut out a lot of Dumbledore's backstory, to be sure, but it didn't register until after I'd slept that they almost cut Grindlewald entirely! He was barely in part one, but at the time I thought we'd be getting more in part two . . . but that didn't happen. I'm a bit bummed on that front.
Also, they pretty much cut Teddy Lupin (and did cut Victoire) but that's less bothersome. Well, except that part of the reason Rowling said she even killed Tonks and Lupin was because she wanted to have a war orphan in the new generation, and if you cut that orphan from the movie that reason falls flat. Whatever.
Oh, and there were only three trailers before the movie started. One was for Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which no one seemed particularly interested in until Tom Felton came on screen and then everyone screamed :-P
