So! I saw the new Trek film just now!
FIRST OF ALL a bit of a funny anecdote (it's kind of short for an anecdote, but whatever): Most of the people in the theatre were thirty years old and older, so they were probably old fans of TOS. I bet it was one of them that did this :-D Anyway, when Uhura follows Spock into the turbolift and ends up kissing him?
Someone in the theatre yelled out, "WHAT?" And then I laughed. (What? It's funny!)
Bones was SUCH an entertaining character. I loved his introduction especially :-D I've always had mixed feelings about Bones because the way he reacted to Spock's emotions (and usual lack thereof) didn't jive well with me, but that wasn't really an issue in the film.
Simon Pegg as Scotty (which I had been dubious about. I mean, Simon Pegg? Really?) was actually really good. Funny, too, obviously.
THAT'S ANOTHER THING. The humour! I can be easy to amuse sometimes, I admit, but the truth of the matter is that I have always seen Star Trek as a franchise full of humour. Okay, it isn't necessarily, uh, intentional all the time, but it usually is and that's an important part of my Star Trek experience. AND THIS FILM DELIVERED. There were so many funny bits. Intentional funny bits, even!
(One of my favourites: "So her name is Nyot-" "I have nothing to say on the matter." :-D)
Chekov was unexpectedly fantastic. He was so enthusiastic! ("I can do that!")
Sulu got to fence (not shirtless, but whatever :-P). I mean, I highly doubt that was regulation fencing, but he was up against some angry Romulans, so all is forgiven.
THEY EVEN KILLED A REDSHIRT. I shouldn't be so thrilled about this, but I am.
RE: the Vulcan bullies - Don't you know that bullying is illogical??
Cast Highlights
Paul McGillion (Dr. Carson Beckett from Stargate Atlantis) was in the film - he was the guy who didn't call Kirk's name, and then explained that Kirk was on academic suspension and therefore not allowed to serve on the rescue mission.
Jennifer Morrison (Dr. Allison Cameron from House MD) played Kirk's mother. Which made me o.O, by the way.
Winona Ryder played Spock's mother, which I already knew, but still find noteworthy.
RIGHT. So. I really liked it. I can't wait to see it again!
