The TV flashes, “please stand by.” The puzzled family stares into the multitude of blending colors as the screen changes into a man at a podium with the seal of America emblazoned in the background. This man has an aura of fear and grimness about him. He begins talking as a pack of people with video cameras, or what seem to be people, stare into his darkened eyes, avidly waiting news. These beastly people start to become impatient waiting for the sugar coated words to end and the disastrous meat to come forth. Each one hungers to be the first one to regurgitate it to the world. The catastrophic information then pours from the darkened eyed man and the media animals become enraged and frantically lash out into their cameras with articulation and pronunciation. The family watches on as blow after blow of the media’s coverage rocks their tiny suburban home. This is the media’s affect on society. Without fail, the media has always shaped society into a fearful and apprehensive being by exploiting situations and almost always taking pessimistic outlooks.
Throughout the 1990’s the media has shown an interest in exploiting horrible events or tragedies. Some key misfortunes were the O.J. Simpson trial, the JonBenet Ramsey murder and the death of princess Diana. Some ways in which the media affected the American people were when Barbara Walters interviewed JonBenet’s parents. In this interview, Barbara Walters barraged the parents with questions and demanded answers. The media has a way of twisting coverage to their side. Princess Diana was revered as a princess and a wonderful person. She was televised as almost a goddess of good nature and people made a lot of money off of her death because of the media, for instance, the people that made Beanie babies. In the O.J. Simpson trial, the media had coverage of the court case non-stop. You couldn’t turn on the TV without hearing or seeing the trial. By saturating the television, the media made every one think about this tragedy and never let them forget it.
The OJ Simpson trial effected American society in many ways. During the trials there was much heated debate among races. African Americans believed that this case was a situation where the Detective, Mark Fuhrman, planted evidence in order to frame OJ Simpson purely on the fact that he was African American. This side began to become more believable to the jury after a witness brought in a taping recording of twelve hours of Detective Fuhrman expressing his hatred for the African American race. Added in the conversation to the recording was a testimony by the Detective to planting evidence and committing other racial injustices. This would add on to the belief, in African American culture, that police are out to get them. This belief contradicts Caucasians belief that in was a failure in the judicial system. To many whites this was a clear attempt that our government had failed. They had saw the overwhelming evidence put against the defendant and were stunned in disbelief in result. The prosecution had put a motive on OJ Simpson, placed him at the crime scene and even showed his path away from the scene. Also the prosecution had been able to prove that OJ Simpson had actually had a history of domestic violence.
The effect in the end of the trial did nothing but worsen the relationship between African Americans and Caucasians. Whites believed that since the trial of Rodney King where they took the African American side, a recent case of a beating of a black man, that there was not still grudge between the two races and that there was no such racial injustices anymore. And because of this the two races began to butt heads when they disagreed with this trial.
Also, throughout this trial, more and more people began to get interested in the trial. This was due mainly to the fame of the defendant and the beauty of the pregnant wife. Many news channels began to have and advertise the trial, calling it names such as “All Day with OJ”. Every news channel had people debating their views on the trial. Black media though mostly were mostly dealing with the concern of whether they should bother with the case since after OJ had left professional football he had basically decided to abandon his black roots. This hysteria led to an economic boom in the news industry.

The JonBenet Ramsey murder, the O.J. Simpson trial and the death of princess Diana rocked the American psyche as a whole. This was mostly due to the media. The media stepped into all of these situations and subjugated them. They enlarged and saturated everything with these events; this had a negative effect on American society. People became more fearful and distrust worthy of their fellow man. Some may even go so far as to say the media is why people are fighting in Iraq and other war torn countries. The media broadcasts and draws people to its side.
