25 Aug - Cats eating peaceably

Aug 28, 2014 17:49

Even after all these years, I still can't get over having cats who can eat their food right next to each other. Our old cats, Cymry and Polly, eventually had to be fed on different floors of the house because they'd fight if they were anywhere near each other at meal times.

We've got quite the high tech setup these days. )

I really like the fountain. We have one but it's like a little bubble pool and in our hard water area it gets silted up with lime scale (the pump is like a fish tank pump). I can't quite see what brand that is?

It's a Drinkwell... but it also has a pump similar to the sort used in a fish tank. I suspect it would give you problems, too... we don't have hard water, but we still have to clean it out from time to time

Boy, that is a high tech setup. I've just got the traditional bowls sitting on a glass cutting board.

We really did get them specifically for when we're away... we had to find a new solution because since we moved they get so anxious when we're gone that if we just use a regular, non-automated feeder, they'll eat a week's worth of food in a couple of days! But when we were testing these new ones out, we discovered that they solved a few other eating problems the cats had been having. They'll actually leave food in their bowls now and Zoë is no longer eating all of her food and then whatever is left of Numfar's (Zoë has a reason to be weird about food, since before we got her she'd been left in an abandoned apartment for a few weeks without fresh food or water).

Oddly, I think it helps that they've figured out how to "game" the system... sticking a paw up the shoot will get a few pieces of food. It's like they know they can get at least a little more food whenever they want it, so they aren't anxious about food anymore.
