It all started when she tripped over a pair of shoes that weren't hers.

However it was the shape & size that was the most interesting. They were square, like to shiny purple bricks, capped steel cermet!

Realization dawned, as a reflection shone back from the left shoe.

"Damn!" She caught herself, just regaining her balance before falling flat on her face in the living room.

Normally she would have stopped to ponder who's damn shoes they were, and why they hadn't been put away, but she was already late for lunch with her mother. Who would have thought that this would be the critical error in this entire fiasco of events leading up to the biggest day of her life.

So without much thought, other than they were a nice pair of strappy sandals, she grabbed her car keys and dashed out of the door in hopes that her mother would not be too annoyed with her.

"Glenn," she said flatly.

"Howdy," Glenn drawled and executed a mock salute. "I found it." She leaned forward, smiling. "And it wasn't that hard." She extended a red, worn, paperback book towards the other young woman. "It's not myth." Now she grinned a bit more, "But is magic."

She took the book out of reflex. "I don't believe in magic."

Glenn shrugged. "Maybe not now, but you will." She nodded pleasantly and then, like that, turned and strode away.

She stared down at the book, fighting the urge to throw it after the departing woman.

"Why do I always get myself into things I don't need?"

She sighed to the heavens, hoping someone would hear her out there in the grand universe. However, no one was listening. Still, seeing the intricate design on the cover made her want to open it up.

The annoying beeping of her cellphone alarm snapped her out of her daze. Her mother was gonna kill her. Stuffing the book in her over-sized purse she rushed down the back stairs in hopes of hailing a cab at this time of day.
