{admin} Poll On Fandom Tag Wrangling...

Dec 27, 2014 13:54

femslash_today has been around since 22 November 2005 and we've amassed quite a few fandom tags over the last 9 years, and we have some good news and some bad news.

The good news about that is we've found, linked, and tagged to quite a bit of femslash in that time.

The bad news is that we're running out of tags to continue doing this. And we won't even get into the issue that the tagging of posts has fallen rather behind at present.

Because femslash_today is a Plus account, it gets 1200 tags to use. We're currently sitting at 1145, with the following stats for fandoms with 10 or less entries.
  • 10 entries: 10
  • 9 entries: 18
  • 8 entries: 18
  • 7 entries: 30
  • 6 entries: 24
  • 5 entries: 40
  • 4 entries: 76
  • 3 entries: 80
  • 2 entries: 164
  • 1 entry: 472
  • 0 entries: 21
The TL;DR there is that 953 of our 1145 fandoms have 10 or less entries, and 853 of those are at 5 or less. Yes, by updating the entries that have no tags on them, these numbers could very well change, but we don't think it will change enough to make a difference with our tagging system issues.

There are two options for how we can correct this issue: revamp the tags system or get a paid account. As the latter is not something that the admins are financially able to do, what we're proposing at this point is a cleaning up and revamping of the tags system. If we do this, it will require some assistance from you, our loyal readership.

The current options to revamp the tags system are as follows [with commentary from your admins]:
  1. Create new fandom tags only when a fandom has 5+ links.
Doable only if the archivists work together OR we get a dedicated tags archivist every 2 months.
  2. Create new fandom tags only when a fandom as 10+ links
Doable only if the archivists work together OR we get a dedicated tags archivist every 2 months.
  3. Don't tag new fandoms
Not really feasible for new fandoms that come up.
  4. Use a generic 'fandom'-type tag for anything with less than 5 links
For example, "misc anime", "misc videogames", "misc web series", "misc drama TV", etc.
  5. Use a generic 'fandom'-type tag for anything with less than 10 links
For example, "misc anime", "misc videogames", "misc web series", "misc drama TV", etc.
  6. Do nothing.
Not really feasible for new fandoms that come up.
We would appreciate it if you could take the time to fill out our poll on where to proceed from here. We'll be leaving the poll open for 2 weeks. Please feel free to leave a comment if you have thoughts on other options we could employ to resolve this issue.

Thank you.
