“She looks dead.”
“Hush, Envy.”
Dante waved the eldest sin away with a motion of her hand, her head not turning. The homunculus had a point, however. Dante peered closely into the eyes of the desert girl and saw nothing behind them. They were dull and lifeless as a corpse’s, just as they should be. Dante nodded, pleased, and brushed her fingers along the girl's cheek.
“She can’t be any fun like that.”
“Haven’t you something to do?” Dante rose, her narrow skirt clinging to her calves. She circled the seated girl, who’s blank eyes focused on nothing. It was all because of the drugs, of course. The girl was sedated, kept in a blissful stupor and only just on the edge of awareness. It was best that way. She was like a beautiful, exquisitely crafted doll. Empty and pliable.
“Right now? No.” Envy shrugged and joined in the pacing about the girl. “So this is gonna be your next body.” He seemed to be appraising the girl, one hand on his hip and one lean leg cocked.
“Do you like her?” Dante placed her hands on the girl’s shoulders, drawing back her hair. Envy raised an eyebrow, as though put off by the lilting purr that slipped into Dante’s voice.
“I remember her in Lior,” Envy said, crouching down. “Clingy little thing, always whining about her dead boyfriend. Then the Elric brat came along…”
“Yes, she seems quite taken with him.” Idly, Dante played with Rose’s hair, twining her fingers through the dark brown strands. A thoughtful expression played over her features and she let her hand fall away. Edward had seemed rather fond of the girl, now that she thought about it. Edward who had his father’s look and grace and wit. Edward who burned with a fire that Hohenheim had never possessed. This girl loved Edward, and he surely felt something for her. She was beautiful and innocent, a blushing virgin despite her motherhood. She stood poised, trapped between maiden and mother. Of course Edward would want her.
“What?” Envy’s eyes were narrowed, as though he were following Dante’s thoughts.
“Nothing.” Dante flashed a small smile to Envy. “Simply thinking on what I can do with her body when it’s mine.”
“A hell of a lot more than you can do with it now,” Envy muttered, springing to his feet.
“I think you’d be surprised,” was all Dante said, her hands nice again playing with the girl’s hair. Eventually the moved down, cupping heavy breasts and tracing over the swell of abdomen. And still Rose’s dull and lifeless eyes stared at nothing, unblinking, as though she were dead.
