somebody told me that this planet was small
Karlie still gets a little paparazzi attention since the Jonas moment. That's what Jourdan calls it, like the neon moment or the maxi dress moment. Jourdan isn't being dismissive, it's just her way of saying it was a thing and it's done. But Karlie is still a woman who looks like a model and is over 6 feet tall so sometimes she gets people taking her picture who aren't interested in street style. But she doesn't have big boobs and she isn't trying to be in movies so it isn't that often.
She hates when they recognize her and she's with Riley, though. It's not his fault, she thinks, he didn't have a Jonas moment. And she worries a little that even without big boobs or a cameo in a Justin Timberlake movie, Jonas ex out with her female lover's incredibly super adorable little boy would be enough for someone to make a story out of. She's just a part-time model now, a part-time student at Columbia but everyone's desperate for content.
So she slouches and dresses more student and less 'I have a closet of high heels just because they're beautiful' when she runs errands with the most important toddler in the world. The slouching is the hardest part. She hears her dance teachers hissing in her brain as soon as she rounds her shoulders.
But Riley smiles up at her and hums as he grasps her hand tightly and that happy buzz is much louder than any sounds in her head.
"You're a good mommy," Riley says.
"Thank you," she says. "That's the nicest thing anyone's said to me today."
"My mummy's the best," Riley adds quickly.
"I agree," Karlie says. "She's prettier than me, too, I think."
"Yeah," Riley says. He nods and looks serious. "I don't think I've seen anyone pretty like Mum. Maybe in a book."
"I don't know," Karlie says. "What book?"
"I haven't read all the books," Riley says. "There's a bunch, you know."
"Very good point," Karlie says. She laughs in her head.

Riley is sleeping, finally, and Jourdan is doing pilates in the living room while she watches her downloaded Eastenders on her iPad. "Because I'm an old cow," she said a year ago, "I have to do something." She's nothing like old, but Karlie says the same thing. Old for models, even part-time models, or 3/4 time models like Jourdan.
Karlie does her homework and takes a two minute gratitude break. It sounds so corny but Donna Karan made them all do it once before a show. Karlie does have so much to be grateful. She watches Jourdan beating the air and grimacing and feels very very blessed. She says, "Do you think if I had a baby, he'd think I was the prettiest in the whole world?"
"Who're you having this baby with?" Jourdan pants a little and then sits up. Karlie is technically not supposed to talk to Jourdan during pilates because they both know Jourdan will use any excuse to stop. But she was forbidden by Jourdan so there really isn't any enforcement.
"With you, duh." Karlie shrugs. "So I wouldn't be the prettiest mom again," she says, laughing. "He'd be all, oh, other mommy is so the prettiest."
"I'm not going to be anyone's 'other mommy.'" Jourdan's exaggerated American accent is awful.
"Fine, it can be mum and mom, how's that?"
"Much better," Jourdan says. She looks up from her laptop where she's paused an episode of Grey's to watch next. Karlie can see the subtitle across the bottom, someone saying 'you're my person.' Jourdan says, "What?"
"Do you really have the subtitles on for Grey's?"
"Yes," Jourdan says. "I understand them fine, thank you very much, I just sometimes have to turn down the sound for you know who." Riley went through a bout of super light sleeping and night terrors a few months ago. Karlie's mom says sometimes all you can do for your kids is love them til it passes with stuff like that. "So, what, you want babies now? Like, right now?"
"I still want five," Karlie says. "And I was just thinking, now is better than later. Med school and residency don't really mix with pregnancy, I mean, if you can plan it, you should, you know?" And she's a few years from graduating college right now at this rate.
"Five, still," Jourdan says. She smiles. "I can't wait to see how you're getting on with that after you have number one. Which we have to plan for you."
"Yeah," Karlie says. "I know, I know."
"You earned that 'a' in biology," Jourdan says. She sits down next to Karlie at the table, folding her elbows in so she doesn't disturb any of the books or notebooks or laptop all higgely piggley everywhere. "I like that we have to plan, it's probably better than the usual." She lightly moves Karlie's hair off her neck and kisses her there. "See you in bed," she says with a wink.

They tried to get a cab for five minutes after Riley's doctor appointment, but none came and Jourdan said, "He wants to be home, let's take the subway." After a doctor's appointment, even a non-emergency one, Riley only stops crying if he's burrowed into Karlie's lap and wrapped in her arms. And he has to see Jourdan the whole time, hold her hand, so they were lucky to find two seats next to each other. Riley is all settled and Jourdan is rubbing his face. "You're a brave boy," Jourdan says.
"Like Miles Morales?" Riley's voice isn't very steady.
"Braver," Jourdan says.
"Way braver," Karlie says. She tries to remember who that is, but then she gets it - Spiderman. Riley's favorite because he looks like Riley. She wonders if she'll worry more if she gives birth to a baby like she worries about Riley. She doesn't think it's possible to worry more than she already does. But she knows Jourdan worries more. Maybe Jourdan would still worry like this if they had a baby together. She totally would, Karlie thinks. It's just that Riley wasn't born when they were together. He has a dad, even if not really. But another one would be theirs. Karlie shakes her head a little and thinks, stop thinking. She hugs Riley tight and he makes a pleased whimper. Jourdan smiles at her and then looks back at Riley.
Over Jourdan's shoulder, Karlie can see an older woman with very cute pink flats on, smiling at both of them. She is probably smiling at Riley, of course, he's the cutest kid ever, even with a tear-streaked face and wobbly voice. Karlie thinks she probably worries about Riley only a little bit less than Jourdan.

After Karlie finishes her mid term exam in her chemistry class, Jourdan insists they have to go dancing. Karlie puts on heels for once and it takes her an hour to choose which pair. "I love my shoes," she says.
Jourdan laughs. "I had no idea." She swears she almost done with her hair. Which means, of course, she's still working on it when the very special nanny who is also a nurse comes. She's the only one Jourdan trusts to watch Riley.
They dance for a very long time, and make out on a couch in the VIP for a slightly less long time (two days later the Post will have a mention of two models making out to get into VIP and how everyone enjoyed the show and Karlie will get so mad), and finally head home. Karlie gets her heels off and her dress and her thong and waits on the bed for Jourdan to finish checking on Riley. "Oh, excellent," Jourdan says when she walks in.
The first thing Karlie manages to say an hour later is "you have such great breasts."
"Cheers," Jourdan says and rolls over to lie on her back. "We should go somewhere. Road trip," she says, using her awful American accent.
"You don't sound American at all, you have to stop."
"hmmm, you know who has to stop? That girl who keeps reporting on your wardrobe in class on fashion spot. Did you know she said you were wearing some flats from H&M yesterday?"
"Those were LANVIN.Oh my god. I can't believe you read her. That also has to stop, it's so creepy."
"She likes to let people know how you dress. I think it's creepier that she gets it so wrong," Jourdan says. "I'll keep reading and I just won't tell you." She says, "Really, we should road trip before we start on all this getting you up the duff."
"You really want to do this?"
Jourdan says, "Don't you?"
"I do," Karlie says. "I do." She rolls onto her side so she can watch Jourdan breathe. "We can adopt, too."
"You are the one who wants five kids."
"Five children, I don't have to get pregnant five times."
"I'm definitely not getting pregnant again," Jourdan says.
Karlie does not say that they can screen for sickle cell from donor sperm or anything like that. She says, "Riley will be the best big brother in the world."
"To all our lovely children. We'll have a beautiful family, be the model version of Brad and Angelina," Jourdan says, laughing.
"I like that plan," Karlie says. "Very much."
