It was luck that Katniss heard her.
It was a quiet whimper that she just barely heard over the rustle of wind through the trees. She froze and slowly dropped into a crouch. She heard it again. Was it someone in pain? Someone was nearby. Someone who likely would kill her given the chance.
Katniss moved as slow and silent as she could and spotted Foxface, the compact female tribute from District Five. Her flowing red hair stood out against the greens and browns of the arena. From behind a thick clump of thorny bushes Katness watched.
Foxface had her left hand down the front of her pants. Her eyes were closed, her hand was moving rapidly in a motion that was unmistakable.
Katniss felt guilty spying on such a private act. At the same time she couldn't stop watching. She felt a flush of something unfamiliar through her body as a look of relief and release crossed the redhead's face.
Foxface wiped her fingers on some foliage, rearranged her pants and stood. She looked around. Katniss stayed absolutely still. Foxface considered for a moment, looked up at the sky and walked off to the right.
Katniss stayed put until the sound of Foxface's movement disappeared into the distance.
