Emma looked at the buffet spread before her, more than a little surprised at the offering. Regina had thought of everything she could make with her poisonous apples to lure her. The light of two candles flickered between them and seemed almost to highlight the golden, succulent apple pie and roast baked with apples. There were apple dumplings and some kind of baked apple casserole.
Anywhere else, Emma would have joked about the pig with the apple in its mouth missing, but not here. Here she could barely speak, could barely think. She swallowed hard and licked her lips, aware that Regina's unblinking gaze followed her motion. "I . . . I thought you invited me here to talk about Henry?"
"I did." Regina's smile was as devious as Emma had ever seen it, but something more was there tonight. There was a touch of something that was almost sweet to her beguiling smile as her dark eyes twinkled in the firelight. "I think it's about time our child's mothers got to know each other a little better, curses and battles aside." She lifted one hand to Emma. "Don't you think?"
Emma half expected Regina's glistening fingernails to turn to claws, but she found herself sitting any way and smiling. "I do," she said and finally took a bite of Regina's apples.
