It can be exhausting, counting the possessions you want to make your own. Things that should have been yours. You should have been Madison Sinclair.
“How’re you holding up?”
Stupid question. You give Veronica a dry look. “Have you seen what they gave her for Christmas?”
She shrugs hopefully. “A brand new dolly?”
“Come on, she can pay a pack of six-year-olds to dress up in doll’s clothes for her.”
“Ugh.” She shakes her head. “Too kinky for my taste.”
You smile, noticing the way she’s staring at you. “They gave her a new car.”
“And the old one was…?”
“Old.”
“Pure greed.” Veronica gives you a knowing nod. “I knew Santa was a lecherous old creep.”
“He never gave you that pony, did he?”
“Nope,” Veronica has a steady expression, but her voice wavers a little. “What can I do for you today, Mac?”
You twist your lip and dangle a set of keys in front of her. She blinks. “Can you find a way to improve her car?”
She gazes at you appreciatively, and you notice how she swallows. “You wanna take it out dancing?”
You shrug. “I was thinking Mexico. But dancing’s good for now.”
She looks away, as if she expects someone to hear. It is both sweet and infuriating. “I’ll meet you in an hour, ok?”
It doesn’t matter sometimes, when your own greed surprises you. You want to be the real Madison, and you want Veronica Mars all to yourself.
