A/N: gonna try to make all 26 drabbles inter-related. it's a continuing series. at least one hopes it will be. this is #1. X & G are obviously not mine, but oh, if they were...
Even after all this time Xena was, much to her frustration, a hard read. The Warrior Princess feigned indifference quite well and Gabrielle was never sure whether the woman was actually listening to her. Somewhere during their travels together, Gabrielle realized that she had actually fallen in love with the taciturn woman; the silence between them made her feel… nervous in ways she couldn't quite put her finger on. Or maybe it was because, as Xena walked ahead of her, Gabrielle couldn't help but appreciate the gentle sway of the warrior's hips. Talking about everything under the sun chased away thoughts of marching up to Xena, pushing her against a nearby tree, kissing her soundly, and showing her that the bard could do so much more with her mouth than just talk.
So caught up was she with such thoughts that she failed to notice the woman in front of her had abruptly halted.
"What did you say?"
Gabrielle's eyes quickly moved from contemplating Xena's rear to blue eyes that looked at her in amused affection.
"What?"
"Something about lickin--"
"Sappho."
Xena's eyebrow quirked. "Oh?"
"Yeah. Poem. You know -- poetry." Gabrielle felt her cheeks suffusing with heat. "Just-- just seeing if you were paying attention."
Seconds passed as they regarded one another. Then, as abruptly as she stopped, Xena turned around again.
"Gabrielle?"
The bard's heartbeat thudded in her ears. "Yes?"
"I've always listened. Always."
"Oh."
It was then that Gabrielle began to reevaluate the efficacy of silence.
