Their relationship has always existed in the moments in-between. Between missions, briefings, near-death experiences and covert ops.
They’re here now, together at the end. Cap’s called SHIELD’s time of death, now all that’s left is to put the beast down. Fury’s not happy, but he’s never happy, not these days. He listened, though, he hasn’t fought Steve’s plan.
They don’t have long, caught in the eye of the storm, that brief moment of hush before they head out to battle. But then they never do. They’re practiced in savouring what they get.
Maria’s hands rest on Natasha’s hip, in her hair. Carefully avoiding her injured shoulder, and Natasha hisses against her mouth, frustrated at being handled so delicately. She’s in more pain than she’ll ever let on, but the lines of her mouth remain soft and inviting when Maria tastes them, when Maria kisses her deep.
There’s a chance they won’t come back from this, a chance they’ll never see each other again. But that threat has always hung over their heads, as much a part of their life as the scent of gun-metal and skin, and they don’t acknowledge it.
Their kisses say more than words ever could, anyway.
