Theirs had been a long and arduous journey, but now, at last, they were to get the peace she had sometimes craved. Still, she had not wanted the peace to come the way it had. She had wanted to grow old with the woman she loved, perhaps settling down in Greece or India once her heroine was too old to still lift her sword.
She should have known that would never happen, Gabrielle thought with a wry grin as she awoke. Xena would always lift her sword; she did still now, even in the afterlife. Still, Gabby wishes their deaths could have come another way, but that is the only thing she would change about their journey. All the other hardships, and the ways in which they overcame them together, she would keep the same and change nothing else.
Xena yawned loudly, and Gabby's smirk grew into a smile that, though the smirk still lingered in it, also showed her pride in the woman she loved. "So," the Warrior Princess asked, "what do you want to do tonight?"
Gabrielle turned to her as the other spirits shied away. "What I always want to do. Be with you. Are you ready to go to the Elysian Fields?"
"I told you: I may never be ready."
Gabrielle's smile remained bright. "Then we stay right here." She floated over to her love and sank into her, her lips pressing first against and then through hers. "Together," the bard added, "forever where we belong."
