An alarm sounded in the ship and then everything that wasn’t secured broke loose. River watched Wash’s dinosaurs as they were carried up toward the ceiling. She held the arm of the pilot’s chair with one hand as the rest of her body floated free.
“River? You okay in there?” Zoe asked, bracing her arms on both sides of the doorway as she peeked inside.
“Wonderful.” River turned a somersault and returned to her original position aloft above the chair. “I feel like a…”
Leaf on the wind, Zoe’s mind supplied and River could feel her heartbreak.
“Trapeze artist. Simon took me to the circus when I was young. Father said it wasn’t befitting our status, but Simon knew I’d love it. I was fascinated by her. I might have even developed a bit of a crush just watching her. There’s something about that grace, the ability to forget about gravity and fly free. That’s who she was.” River pushed away from the chair and floated over to Zoe. She rested her hands lightly against Zoe’s, content to keep her feet off the ground. She smiled, “Or maybe I just was drawn to a woman at home in the air.”
