Her heart hammered in her chest as she realized that she was backed into a corner. "You're not so brave now," one of the men sneered.
"Yeah," another laughed, blowing putrid air. "Not now that you don't have your Warrior Princess around to protect you."
A third thumped his club. "We're going to teach you to shut your mouth, girl."
There was no need to be afraid. Xena would be here at any moment. She'd never let these ruffians touch her. Still panic rose within her as the men came closer. Then the little blonde smiled, though her lips still trembled, as a familiar, beloved shadow fell across them.
They laughed. "The idiot's smiling, boys!"
"We're gonna wipe that smile off of her face fer good. We'll make her scream our names before we're done with her."
Gabrielle shook her head. "No, you won't," she spoke proudly.
They were unable to respond as Xena's battle cry cut through the air and her chakram zipped down around them, taking them all out in less than five seconds. She landed amongst their unconscious bodies and reached out for Gabrielle, who rushed into her waiting arms. Gabby's heart still pounded as she was enveloped by the safe and loving paradise of Xena's arms that always awaited, but the pounding had nothing to do with fear. There was no reason to be afraid, she reminded herself yet again, knowing her words were true, for no matter what happened, her beloved Xena would always come for her.
