A/N: The Saturday after Thanksgiving is the traditional annual viewing of "The Godfather" at my house. I don't think I'm going to be able to look at Mama Corleone the same way after this.
Summary: Carmela teaches her daughter-in-law what it means to be a member of the family
The first time Michael is away on business the lessons begin. Carmela appears in Kay’s doorway that night, steps into the room and explains that the keys to being a wife in this family are silence and obedience.
“Take off your clothes,” she says.
Kay hesitates. Surely this is a joke. “But…” she begins.
She is rewarded for this insubordination by a slap across the mouth.
“Take off your clothes.”
Kay strips, unbuttoning her blouse, unfastening her skirt, letting them drop to the floor along with her foundation garments. She keeps her eyes downcast as she stands naked before her mother-in-law.
“Lie back on the bed,” Carmela instructs.
Kay moves into position. Carmela smiles and takes a seat on the edge of the bed. “Good.”
Kay bites her lip to keep from crying out as the older woman’s hand glides over Kay’s body. “I worried about my son’s choice of a wife. You aren’t Italian. You don’t know how to handle this life. You expect everything to follow a natural order, a moral order that fits society. You will learn that family is more important than anything and that everything serves the family. You will learn that marriage is the easiest tie to sever and that in order to remain protected, you must demonstrate extraordinary loyalty. Do you think you can do that?”
Kay nods.
“We are expected to be strong while our husbands are away. They can carry on like dogs, take mistresses, sleep with whores, while we pine ourselves away at home. Just as we do not ask them about their business, they do not ask about ours.”
Carmela’s fingers whisper over Kay’s sex, circling and teasing. Kay arches up, eager for more.
“This is our business.”
When Kay comes, she trembles violently, but doesn’t make a sound.
