It isn’t what she’d expected, San Francisco. So big, so many people. Liverpool was a small town; her grandmamma used to tell her stories about when her mum was a girl, when the war started. Told her about the lines of refugees, the planes that took them to the continent. Told her about her great-great-grandparents, how even when the bombs were dropping they stayed.

Her grandmamma takes her to London; there isn’t a shuttle station in Liverpool, not anymore. There’re ruins though. Vi remembers playing football on the cracked, broken concrete.

“My granddaughter the Starfleet officer,” Grandmamma smiles, kissing Vi’s forehead.

And then she’s standing in front of the gate to the Academy, the vastness of the city behind her, and she wants desperately to comm. her grandmamma. It’s too big, too much.

“Hello.”

Vi turns. She’s been given the sensitivity training, but nothing has really prepared her for this. Liverpool, one might imagine, gets few aliens. Especially not one like this, ridged green skin and strange bronze eyes and long, thin lines.

“I am Madeline.”

“Victoria Slater.”

Madeline looks at her, head cocked to the side. “Are you Human?”

“Yes.”

Madeline taps her own cheek with one long finger, then taps Vi’s. “This means I am happy to meet you. I have met very few Humans before.”

Vi smiles. “I am happy to meet you, too.”
