Behind the joy I sometimes see sorrow.
She sits forlornly by my side and gazes out at the white tipped waves. The sea breeze ruffles her hair and she absently brushes a lock of it from her face. At times like these I know she is thinking of them and the life she left behind.
I want to take her hand, pull her close, assure her all will be well; but I make no move, utter no words. Her mourning must be borne by both of us, and the death of all things past must be complete before there is resurrection.
Instead, I look at her and smile, and in the tentative smile she returns I see the spark of a new life.
