River crouched on the floor, watching as the engine dripped, dripped like a clock with a regular tick tink tick. It was condensation, water growing where it shouldn't, and it made a puddle on the greasy floor. River felt like that sometimes, her thoughts dripping and slipping, and then they weren't even thoughts but feelings, terror-feelings with blue that she couldn't stop.
River heard the clunk of boots walk up next to her, but she didn't move her eyes from the drip.
"River?" Kaylee asked.
Simon had been hopeful, but the lithium compound hadn't worked.
"Carbon five," River said. "Hydrogen three, lithium, oxygen, but they didn't stop the dripping, slipping, everywhere, I can't--"
Kaylee knelt down and put her arms around her, and River listened to her heartbeat instead.
